Who gets the money anyway when you buy a domain.

the company that you bought it off. Well really, you arent paying them for the domain, you are paying them to make sure nobody makes a website with your domain name after you have bought it.

Leetnet.com

Janglefish.BIZ

hansjerkov.gov

or other irrelivant, ugly protocol.

i dont like the new .info's and .biz's... nobody can remember the url then. So imo, always try and go with .net, .com or if you're uk, .co.uk.

...it's like looking for an unused AOL or Hotmail email account name. If your site is specifically about something, pick what makes it unique and put it in the name. Did I read above that every domain name has been used? I find that very hard to believe. I can believe that all the good ones are taken, but take some creative liberties with your site name. Never bought one before, but if you choose a very obscure one, wouldn't it cost less?

No, normally they are purchased from a place like www.register.com or www.godaddy.com, where they are just a simple fee of $10-15 per year. You might be thinking of buying one that someone has already registered, in which case they could charge as much as they wanted for it.

But, as long as they aren't currently registered, you could purchase something like "buystuff.com" for as much as "asffgadasdasdasdasd.com" would cost.

I tried coming up with the longest domain name in the world but then I though, "Hey, with a domain name 60,000 characters long who will visit?"

www.pfftcatgotnokeysnewb.com

Isn't that from the flash with the housemaster, the guy with a bread for a head?

I'd hit it

I'm serious, who wants to type 60,000 characters to go to a site with little on it?
