A huge 40-minute machinima that has suddenly appeared on my news-scope-o-metre (powered by the tortured souls of a thousand pirates) is now available for download. It's best summed up by the words of the creators:[br]
The movie tells the story of Roy Durand as he begins work in what he believes to be a dull government job, yet inexplicably ends up working for a secret multinational team tasked with protecting the world. A six month university project, the film combines scripted sequences with AI based combat scenes and first person segments to create an unusual mix of styles, with action packed set pieces. The project also features custom made locations (with textures from popular level designer IZaNaGI) and the music of composer Justin R.Durban.

[br]The film is available from the project website in both smaller chunks and the full 40 minutes. Having watched the Trailer, it certainly looks worth a gander!

Sulky you have the time typo on the first line - 40 mins not 4 :)

I'm downloading now.

Curses foiled again etc.
My mistake-o-scope-o-meter failed to detect it this time.

You better, or your soul will be one of those powering my planned metaphor-o-matic once I get the phonetic capacitor figured out.

Strange. It works fine for me.

Just try repeatedly?

Well, I watched the first two scenes:

- Mapping seems very poor... The first scene was just dull to look at, only a couple of textures used and they're all grey.
- Why did this train station have no track, and walls at each end of the platform?
- Second scene its meant to be a train station (I think) but these random screens are all over the place. Pretty but why?
- Voice acting was ok, the woman clearly had a terrible mic though. No effort appeared to have been put into equalizing the voices to make them appear to be in the same room...
- Long periods with no action... You see them go down the steps and then it cuts (badly) to down the steps where the camera spends about 30 seconds messing around...
- No continuity - the aliens get shot then it cuts and suddenly theres more of them, then it cuts again and they've vanished again.

Not sure I want to watch the rest of it to be honest. Nice that the effort is put in, just needed a bit more to make it worth it I think.

I'd have to agree with eAi, especially annoying to me was the voice-acting. Some were loud, others were too quiet, so I pretty much had to raise and lower my volume everytime.
Maybe I just expected too much, but I didn't really like it. Good effort though.

Some basic real-world camera work knowledge would go a long way for this. It was pretty painful.

I think they would have been beter releasing this as a short HL2 mod... I mean... why didn't they?

It was alright, less than I expected. That thing with the combine elite at the end was just horrid. A very stupid thing to stick in the plot. I think the first half was great, then it just went downhill from there (story wise).

The whole part at the end, where he's reading the monitor and sees they're going to attack their base. ok so randomly 2 minutes later theres a horde of zombies outside their door? It was almost straight out of a B-movie. The zombies knocked over the turrets and they kept looping footage of when the turrets were still up, and the scene was pretty amateurish.

poorly scripted and edited, camera work was pretty bad, voice acting was terrible, and the maps themselves were poorly textured.

But this is one of the first machinimas I've seen of hl2.

IMO if you want to see a really good hl2 machinima look at this (although its short and has no dialouge, it has really great camera work and editing)

Oh, forgot to post my thoughts.

It sucked, horribly. Dragged on for so freaking long. That move could have been reduced to 8 minutes. The humor was bad, the voice quality sucked, the voice ACTING sucked, whoever edited all this together has no place in movie editing, the story was extremely cliche "oh we have to investigate this place, oh I have a bad feeling, oh there're some monsters, bla bla blah" exept it's worsened by mixing in horrible and USELESS scenes that I can only guess are attempts at humor.

Not to mention the mapping was nothing close to impressive.

But at least they tried.

It just makes me sad that the machinima here at HL2.net failed to get off the ground.

That was pretty cool!

On the same page I just found this- a hilarious and (tbh) slightly disturbing peice of Alyx-love from some obsessed fan. The acting is extremely well done in some parts, and it's well put together.
But I've linked it because it's perhaps the most CHEESY thing I've ever seen and I can't stop laughing at it
A shot which comes one and a half minutes in nearly made me fall off my chair

can anyone bear to watch it all the way through? :p

HAHAHAHAH Barney Kleiner and the G-Man are SO DAMN HILARIOUS

Pretty bad. Level design was poor along with the texturing... voice acting was crappy. It was really, really boring to watch all the way to the end.

Bad script, childish dialouge, some acting was OK, but mostly crap. Camera work was laughable. For the first ten minutes I could'nt be quite sure if it was supposed to be a comedy or an action thing. I'm still not sure. No continuity, long pauses between cuts and poor sound and map quality.

To summarize: They took twenty minutes worth of bandwidth, and I want it back!

Okay, just watch the final part; How did the zombies ride the elevator, why was the combine elite there, why did they try to blow him up with an RPG from half a foot away? And then there's that huuuuuge exposition dump at the end. And the beginning. And in the middle. This was made by university students? Oh god...

First part was boring as hell and unfunny. I haven't bothered with the 2nd or 3rd part.

And why does everything need to be comedy? Could someone possibly make a serious one for once, heyzeus christe :|

I liked this one better. It takes an audio clip from A Few Good Men but you still have to give credit for the lip synching, facial expressions and hand gestures - totally spot on.

All i can say is "OUCH!!!". That movie really hurts!
As a mod developer i know the time it takes to make that kind of work, so either the guy is a great fan of Ed Wood, or he's blind and deaf!
For those who don't know who's Ed Wood, all i can say is that it was the genious director that made such masterpieces like "Plan nine from outer space" or "Bride of the monster".

I'm going to be writing a FacePoser tutorial over the next few weeks, which should help people get involved. Ep1 will help too, with its new facial animations. I've been playing with the new system and it really is SO much better, even with an outdated version of FacePoser denying me access to some of the new stuff.

Edit: Oh yeah, and the video this thread is about is rubbish. Don't download it.

This was such a massive waste of time on everyone's part. The creators wasted their time, anyone unfortunate enough to be fooled into downloading it by following links on sites which can usually be trusted for interesting half-life 2 related news, wasted their time. Such a waste infact, that it's made me go and register here just so I can post about what a waste of time we have on our hands.

Time has been wasted here! :imu:

It fascinates me that something like this could even come about. All those hours sat infront of a pc and for this, what a huge, disgusting shame. I sicked. This isn't even the B-Movie some comments here make it out to be. :afro:

This whole thing reminds me of what happened once when I ate a load of crab apples, I ended up sitting on a toilet for 2 hours and all I got at the end was a brown pebble called Marlon. It stank and made the water splash back up. :monkee:

Sorry, but I didn't feel like spending half an hour downloading and watching the whole thing before newsposting since I wanted to go to bed. :(

It's a 40 minute machinima and you don't get those every day...

You've got around to seeing it by now though right? What did you think, sweetcakes? :imu:

:bounce:

The firs episode was entirely mediocre, and bear in mind I tend to be forgiving about these things.
Not forgiving enough to bother watching the rest instead of The Amazing Screw-on Head though.

right.. the mapping architecture is impressive, but dull lighting
