Just to pre-empt this thread inevitably turning into a rant about the white man exploiting the third world and so on, I feel it is apt to point out that ALL countries were, in very recent history all things considered, once rampantly poor places ravaged with starvation, disease and suffering. Most of the third world today still has a far better standard of living than today's developed world did a few hundred years ago.

The comfortable lives we enjoy today in the West are not the natural order of things. We - or more accurately, our ancestors - earned our relative freedom from suffering and poverty through building a civilisation capable of overcoming these basic human problems. It is a question of what we DO have, rather than one of what a lot of the world does not.

Why, therefore, must we feel guilty for our accomplishments purely because not every society has achieved the same? It is a precarious state of prosperity, and it would only take one generation of errors for us, once again, to be poor, disease-ridden and starving. As in the fall of the Roman Empire.

For this we need to accept some responsibility for reperations I think.

In exactly the same manner that the poor countries didn't get where they are today because they weren't as good at conquest as we were. It's not that they were ethically superior in any way...their application of violence was merely far less effective.

In fact, the British Empire is by far the most benevolent empire the world has ever seen. It is the only empire in history which preserved the cultures, customs, religions and languages of the countries under its control. And most, if not all, of those countries are now worse off for the lack of the empire.

For this we need to accept some responsibility for reperations I think.

Africa - or anywhere else - being presently poor has absolutely nothing to do with us.
