I was wondering how much people actually know about the Loudness War.

It sucks that it's the standard now... it's just, horrible.

Pretty old news, nothing much we can do but find artists who employ masterers who know wtf they're doing.

The problem is it not being the masterers. It's the companies forcing the masterers to do it.

Yeah its pretty old but important to know. However there isnt much to worry about because they cant push it much further, and the only artists that drive it to extremes are mainstream pop artists and club music, and then its about getting a standard rather than pushing it. Most bands have good mastering and most engineers appreciate balance. Compression does much more good than band, try throwing random super high headroom tracks in a playlist, then throw it in a crappy portable stereo and you'll see what i mean. Plus, LOTS of bands benefit from a massive pumping sound, i.e club music, stuff like gogol bordello, anything to party to. :)

I was talking with a person who masters music, and he said that a lot of the guys he works with totally ruin the track by applying way too much compression onto it.
