I am getting the same "Memory can not be read" error on startup a lot of you are getting. It would appear to happen just after the black screen with the copywrite info on it, as the computer is switching to full screen mode. I have reinstalled the game and the video drivers, searched for virus's and trojans, run ad-aware, defragged my hdd, tried each of my 512MB mem sticks seperately, reseated same, tweaked windows, disabled unused services, mem tested for 9 hours with no errors, updated windows xp, updated directx, and it still wont work. I think I can play it in windowed mode, it let me start the game the other day, but it wont play in full screen mode.

Thats not acceptable.
Anyone have any other suggestions?

type this in hl2 launch options:

-fullscreen +mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1

if it works try:

+mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1

Nope, that didnt work, still crashes at the same point.

At what point does yuor game crash? Mine crashes at the first meeting with Barney practicaly everytime! I recently upgraded my mobo, CPU & RAM but the crash occurs at the same point in exactly the same way.

man i feel your pain, other than what i suggested i dont know what else could fix it.
check the steampowered.com websites support section they have loads of tips on how to cure it.

Mine never even gets to the menu, its right as the first loading screen on startup appears. As I said, I could play it in windowed mode, but thats not acceptable to me.

Comte DeLoach I have exactly the same problem, at that loading screen. Can you tell me how to play in windowed mode (sorry if its a noob question i dont care) as I would try playing the game in it.

Mine comes up with a video error, and resets to another mode, then it does it again and resets to safe mode, and then its in a window and I can play it then.
IMO there is a serious memory leak somewhere making several errors occur.

Mine crashes sometimes when attempting to load a saved game, or sometimes when just starting up the game. It resets the video mode for no reason and sometimes it locks up during the initial loading screen. I tried all kinds of tweaks and fixes but nothing helps.

that is for the stutter problem ..

Woot!

I just fixed my memory crashing by swaping my memory around :D

Diddn't expect it to be that simple after all the software fixes I tried :D

Yeah, I've said this before in another thread: Try skipping a slot if you have 2 ram sticks. It worked for my freind and now his ram is being read at faster speeds in the POST because of it.

Of course, I don't think it would apply in madcat's case.

Funny is, you guys have all these high tech uber computers, while I'm stuck with my AMD 1400, with Geforce Ti4200 (stop laughing). I can play HL2 perfectly smooth with medium settings, not a single crash. Well, except this one time, it kept resetting my computer. Solved it by rolling back my driver. HL2 advices me to update this and that, well.. no.

I just reran all my video drivers after running driver cleaner, and it started working just fine. I dont know what happened, or why it didnt work before, but it works fine now.

Weird.

I only have 2 ram slots on my motherboard so I cant swap ram

So do I, I have 2 sticks in 2 slots so I put them in the oposite slots....
