That mystery screenshot has been revealed to be a new monolith intellectual property, called F.E.A.R.
LOS ANGELES, CA - (May 11, 2004) – Vivendi Universal Games announced today the development of the latest action-packed project from the developer that created award-winning games like Aliens vs. Predator™2, the No One Lives Forever™ franchise and Tron®2.0. Developed by Monolith Productions, F.E.A.R. ™ (First Encounter Assault and Recon), is an intense first person close-quarters combat experience with rich atmosphere and an engaging storyline.

The story begins as an unidentified paramilitary force infiltrates a multi-billion dollar aerospace compound. The government responds by sending in Special Forces, but loses contact as an eerie signal interrupts radio communications. When the interference subsides moments later, the team has been literally torn apart. As part of a classified strike team created to deal with threats no one else can handle, your mission is simple: Eliminate the intruders at any cost. Determine the origin of the signal. And contain this crisis before it spirals out of control.

“We are excited about partnering with Monolith once again and especially the creative team directly involved on this project,” said Michael Pole, VU Games’ Executive Vice President of Worldwide Studios. “Without giving away too much, F.E.A.R. might be described as The Matrix meets The Ring and the team has set a goal to immerse the player in an intense blockbuster action movie experience - they are well on their way to delivering just that.”

In a North American exclusive, F.E.A.R is debuting on the G4 Network today – the eve of the gaming industry’s largest event, The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) - at 5:00pm PST/8:00pm EST during the half-hour Pre-E3 Show.

F.E.A.R. will be available in 2005 for the PC with an expected ESRB “Mature” rating.
Cool premise, let's see if they can do something with all those sparks.

The Matrix? Oh please God don't let there be bullet-time. But otherwise it sounds pretty cool. A lot more interesting than the screenshot would suggest.

well, if they mean gritty urban setting, along with the ring's stylish and slick imagery (and maybe a little scary) then we're talking about what stands to be a cool game.

Playing the NOLF games, I always got the sense that Monolith could do a really cool serious game if they tried.

new engine too..and its not a new version of lithtech either

sounds like they convieniently barrowed every other fps plot ever

Some screenies:

I'm getting so sick of the whole plastic models premise

Looking good :)

Stick some teambased, attack/defend the objective with different classes, action in there and it'll be sweet :)

//off topic:

I've been playing CS/RTCW/ET for so many years online it's time for some next generation online goodness!!!!

pretty good lookin..phew... ya shuzer is right about the models in every new game...besides hl2 pretty much

i think this just about sums up this game:

Beyond the plastickey skin, this game looks quite cool.

The fat nerdlinger sort of indicates that it might not be too serious either.

And I think we all know that stack of pop cans is there to show off the physics. :p

I don't think the character model in the first screen with the F.E.A.R. hat on looks plastic at all. I just think it looks really awesome.

yeah....i have the same problem with D3.....

Im told by the fanboys and "experts" that things dont look like that in real time.

The game looks fine, I don't know where people get this "plastic" business from. It looks like the spec map on the fat guy could use some tweaking, other than that it looks fine.

You don't really think that all of these games(Doom3, Thief3, DE:IW, FarCry, FEAR, Unreal3) are trying to make their people look plastic do you? Then you must think all these developers are just too unskilled to make them look less plastic? Neither is the case. New technology is being introduced into games, and game models are looking different as a result. It's progression, believe me.

no, this is the best gun ever:

Looks like monolith allright... and that's a good thing.

EDIT: And that first shot looks fantastic. nothing plasticky about those faces at all. they look great. the only shiny thing is the girl's breastplate, and that's supposed to be like that. great modeling.

:naughty: -DIES- Oh man, does it seem like all the new upcoming games are all good?

im beginning to think thats the aim, a humor/slapstick/gung-ho approach...look at NOLF... the game will be atmospheric..

im officially exited for yet another game :bounce:

Ah ok. Slapstick games really don't do much for me.....unless strippers are involved.

Have you guys watched the little teaser?
It was awesome! The bullettime demostrated in the teaser was not too bad...

Bullet time? ROOAAAAARRRRR!!!!! A CURSE ON ALL YOUR SOULS! where can I find this teaser?

I dont know........Could it possibly be becuase they all look like they are plastic? :dork:

Although...this isnt as bad as doom3....

fear teaser: woah, cool. nice slowdown effect, some matrix kicking, some plastic models, some good graphics, and a weird driving scene.

Hmm.. looks pretty cool. The bullet time looks like it'd get annoying, but that kick and the guy ragdolling over the railing was awesome

I don't see it, but your entitled to your opinion. Hope you will be able to enjoy all these new games, despite your opinion of their asthetics. You will miss out on alot if you can't.

yup thats about what i'd expect HL2 Nut riding fanboys would say about a game that looks better and probly plays better then HL2.

Looks amazing, what can I say. Eh.. another game to buy.. am I unlucky gamer or what?

It's kind of a dissappointment for me because it seems more like Monolith decided 'What type of FPS setting sells the most? Sci-fi? Let's do that.'
I was hoping something a little more exotic.
Looks good though.
I wonder what they plan to bring to close-quarters combat besides 'bullettime' to keep it interesting.
