I discovered this video while checking up on Game Revolution and I instantly fell in love with it. Maybe I'm a sap, but it actually tugged on my heartstrings a fair bit. Part tribute, part love letter, part defense. It's an understated video expressing the wonder and attractions of video games throughout time and the impact they've had on us - the gamers.

It reminded me of why I am a gamer, why I've been a gamer, and why I will remain to be one for many years to come. Maybe you'll feel the same way.

I think you misunderstand. It's not literally saying that games make you powerful. But with gaming, you have the ability to assume almost any role and do any action you wish. It is a form of self-expression, not just in the titles you pick, but the actions you perform within them and how you personally relate to its content. Like any other medium, it is capable of being both engrossing and stimulating on both intellectual or emotional levels. But unlike any other, the experience you have is very dependent on your own input into the game. Well, at least the non-crap ones.

Games may be entertaining escapism, but that doesn't mean that the sensations and feelings you've experienced are any less your own or real.

Also, I loved the music.

Like dream, I think it was a little corny, but still pretty cool. I really don't think about games that deeply at all, though.

It certainly applies more to the hardcore crowd, which I think I'm safe to consider myself a part of (or would at least like to return to).

I've felt more emotional and visceral connections with games than I have with films or literature, for instance.

Well, me too. I felt that way about FEAR and still Half-Life 2 (I haven't really played them in quite a long time). If that's what's it's all trying to imply, then I guess I do.. but.. you know, with the "How does it feel to create life?? To be a GOD!!!"

I feel it's a valid enough question. There are games that allow you to exert that kind of control, or creation process. Now, the level of sophistication in which these things are implemented are up for debate and personal opinion. But I would be lying if I said I didn't become engrossed in adopting and teaching my pet in Black & White, or begin to actually care about my little digital creations in The Sims. And considering the evolutionary rate of the medium, such involvement will only increase in its potential.

I think the strongest message that comes from it is that video gaming is a passion as legitimate as any other. Its appeal may be incomprehensible to many, but the notion of these being children's toys is outdated and disingenuous.

I just use video games as an escape from reality.

Sit in my room for a couple of hours, lock the door, turn off my phone, and just immerse myself in anything I can get my hands on.

Never thought of it as being that deep, damn.
