I really want to buy this book! I've seen other futurists before, but this guy must be a pro. Also I believe there is a website out there where you can predict something and bet money on if it will come true or not and someone bets against it.

There were plenty of futurists back in the 50's who failed to accurately predict present day, so what makes you think this guy is a pro? Granted the only things that ever came into fruition were things related to GPS technology and the internet. There are jetpacks sure, but they aren't as practical as they thought they would be back then. Not like automobiles yet anyways.

yes anything is possible but for someone who studies a lot on trends, its usually the trends that are long lasting thats what important. jetpacks don't change the world but solar power might. i just read an article on engadget about potatoes being used for electricity in poor parts of the world. if that takes off who knows, and your right small things can change the world, look at handguns and rifles. an average joe has the power to take down the most important man in his nation. but i think this guy studies the macro changes in the world

From the video he seems to base alot of his ideas on the predictable events that are going to happen, in which he has facts for, but his future is going to be a half-truth, maybe even less than half.

You know there unpredictable events in this world, a natural disaster could change the balance of the world forever, a small group countries could united under circumstances, a power shift balance in the region its in.

I don't think this book is worth while to be honest, there too many variables to consider, too many tensions to calculate correctly, paranoid goverments, blah blah blah blah....

To vast to fully predict the future correctly.

One of his predictions which I think would be a good thing if true, is the decline in population growth. Many of the curent problems stem from the fact that there are simply too many of us...

This will happen but prolly less because of China-like mandates and more because of a lack of resources like food and water.

I predict a slow embrace of modern fuel sources. With the demand for energy ever increasing and the amount of fossil fuels decreasing, it is inevitable. It won't be this sudden "oh shit we're out," but more a "we're running out so prices are going up and alternatives are becoming more viable." At some point the prices will level off a bit and there will be a dual energy structure for a while... renewable and non-renewable... which a slow grind toward renewable.

That's just one thing I think is fairly certain for the next 100 years... barring some massive scientific breathrough that creates amazing amounts of energy from renewable resources... like cold fusion.

Based on the things that have happened in the last 10 years sometimes I wonder if we're going to make it through the other 90 of this century ...

probably not, but they say if we make it 300 years from now most of the world will be tannish brown color and everyone will be mixed to all hell

And speak a weird gasping inward language, travel back in time to do blue-collar work and earn interest on their modest wages and be rich in their own time? Yeah, I saw that episode of South Park ;P

>declining population
haha what a load of crock

I'm a lot more optimistic. I think we'll make it.

As Michio Kaku put it, we're really lucky to be alive now, to witness the transition to a "type 1" civilisation.

One thing's for certain, some interesting things will happen this century.

I feel like this guy doesn't possess a total world view. It appears to be very US-centric and uninformed elsewhere. No I will not back up these statements.

Vague, but certainly more true than you or I could possibly imagine.

Really, there's not much place left for food where there is the right climate and ample irrigation. We will need to double the current production of food worldwide.

I guess there are several ways to go about this:

If the plant produces double the fruit, produces fruit double the size, or produces fruit twice as often, as examples

... worldwide. The current population growth is simply unsustainable otherwise.

Food Production Must Double by 2050 to Meet Demand from World’s Growing Population

And water is sort of needed for other things, like everything.
it takes nearly 50 times more water to produce a calorie from beef as it does from potatoes

How much water does it take to make:

1. glass of beer = 19.8 gallons
2. glass of wine = 31.7 gallons
3. cup of coffee = 37 gallons
4. hamburger = 634 gallons
5. cotton T-shirt = 713 gallons
6. sheet of paper = 2.6 gallons

Don't knock that Ace, birth control is the cause of that, time had it that a woman would pop two dozen Wains (kids where I'm from) in her lifetime, now 3 wains is too much for some people. I find it hard to picture having so many wains, but I'm sure thats where child beating came from.

This belongs inside a giant 3-page infographic in the image dump. But too bad, it got closed D:

For those of you saying George Friedan is a crock, he says in the intro to the book in so many words "If even half my predictions are right, I will consider this book a success."

Yes his views are US-centric because the US is the center economically. Money makes the world go round, and we've got 20% of the entire world's money.

His point about Mexico becoming a competing superpower because of their shared position on both the trade oceans is sound, and the rumblings of that power can already be felt with the growing dominance of Mexico in manufacturing. He also mentions that Russia will make a comeback and Poland will come to dominate. George will be far from right in the end, but probably he will be closer than most of could get.

i was annoyed with the solar panel portion of the video. he doesn't factor in any advances in solar panel technology that are destined to come. we can only capture a very low percentage of radiation with the current technology.

in other words...HE LIES!

Meh, he seems to be talking out of his ass for most of the time. We have no idea today what the long-term effects of the financial crisis will be.
