the ppl behind dx10 - includes why vista only.

It's not so much the DX10/Vista mutual exclusivity that's got people's backs up. It's instances where Microsoft have bought Vista exclusivity deals with companies whose games don't need DX10 to run. Remedy's Alan Wake is a good example of this.

Thanks for the article, I'll certainly give it a read at some point.

Good read. Interesting, the're not really "GPUs" but all round processors, for physics graphics and whatever else they could use them for.

From a PC gaming point of view this is rather worrying:

ExtremeTech: It didn't take long for games to take advantage of DirectX 9, but it took a really long time before any games required it. Do you think that's going to happen more quickly with DirectX 10?

Donahue: It's difficult to say if only because the consoles, as you mentioned before, Xbox 360 and PS3, are fundamentally DX9 parts. We're kind of back into a situation we were in before, where there's a lowest common denominator across hardware. If someone is going to do a game that is multiplatform and they want it to run on the consoles, they're going to have to do a DX9-style pipeline anyway. So from that perspective, there are companies that do just one generic cross-platform component and try to hit everything, then there's the guys that do the really exploitive type stuff.

I think you'll see DX10-only in the next two years, certainly. That's about as close as I can pin it, because part of it is going to depend on adoption and installed base of DirectX 10 hardware.

This can't be good. Many people in the industry are saying that with the increased production costs of this generations games, they're gonna have to be multiplatform. It looks like DX10 gaming is going to be hamstrung from the outset.

well, I think basically all the games at the beginning that will support dx10 will also be dx9 as well, it just makes more sense economically trying to sell to as many people as possible

Yes but since the 360 and PS3 hardware can never progress from DX9 the knock on effect will be that few DX10 games will be produced.

Yes but that dosn't mean that couldn't code in a DX10 renderer.

Since we already have a game like Crysis that has 2 coded renderers one for Dx9 and another Dx10 im sure other games will follow.
Also when he was said the Ps3 is fundamentally Dx9 part....well what I think he means by this is the feature set. Ps3 uses a modified Open GL.

I'm also sure that Microsoft has made there Xbox 360 Dx more similar to that of Dx10 to make porting between it and Windows Vista Dx10 easier...Although it will be easier to port i'm guessing the feature set is still more similar to Dx9.

Also making a game for Dx10 should in some ways be more similar than Dx9 on Pc for Console Developers. Because remember on the Pc with Dx9 you have so many things to recode to get it to work on every damn system and to get every feature in. Well with Dx10 because of how the drivers are done it simplifies this for the developer and makes it "Hey it's like this for every single thing". And when working with a console it's a lot more like that because you only have one set of hardware.

Don't forget Microsoft is still working on XNA.

They did say in there that their goal in the end is to make development time shorter for developers.
