Searched, but didn't find anything, so...

OH... MY... FREAKING... GOD.

I just saw this movie and was crying with laughter at so much of it. I was either cringing (good cringing, mind you. It's so offensive on so many levels, but it's in good fun), laughing, or both. The songs were well done, the actors were hilarious, and the execution of the play "Hitler in Springtime"... wow. Just an awesome movie/play.

Only thing I didn't get into was the direction, as it seemed like the director was trying too adhere to closely to a play setting with simple shots, but it's hardly noticeable because I was paying to much attention to the actors. Which, in this case, is a good thing as they do so hideously well at what they do.

Anybody seen either the movie or the play? If not, GO. NOW.

And let me add also: Uma Thurman can really belt out a tune. I was seriously impressed.

Still here? GO!

Saw it last night. Was definately hilarious in some scenes, but if they wanted it so much to be a play, then it should be a goddamn play. I don't like watching movies that are just footage of plays.

Singing bores me to all hell, too.

That movie was best for making me want to see the Gene Wilder version. Since Gene Wilder is so much better than anyone.

So as good as the original then? :O

You know, I haven't seen the original, which is my loss, I know. I'm going to try to find it later on, but holy crap on a stick, I liked the new one.

I honestly can't possibly fathom any way in which it could live up to the original performances (especially the german guy) but damnit, now I've got to see the new one just to find out. :O

Does it still have the top-down shot of the dancers rotating in swastika formation? :D

Oh yeah. The swastika is there in full form. And Will Farrell does a great job as the "the german guy". Him screaming "I WAS NEVER A MEMBER OF THE NAZI PARTY!!!" is priceless.

Will Farrell probably did the best job in the entire movie.

Also, he has a leather trench coat on while at the Hitler auditions. I have the same, exact one. :O

Oh, Erestheux about your earlier post about movies that are like plays, have you ever seen Max? With John Cusack and Noah Tyler? It's a movie about (ironically) Hitler and his personal life. It only incidentally touches on the 3rd reich thing, and focuses more on his personal relationships. Excellent, excellent movie, and a lot of it felt play-like with a lot of still, side shots. I highly recommend it.

Back on topic, I will admit something. I have a weakness for musicals. I don't know why, but I've always liked. So this The Producers was right up my alley.

I enjoyed most of the movie, some of the musical numbers dragged on a bit though, especially at the end.

Umm... you do know that it is a play, right? Won a Tony, even.

I actually really like when they get together a good cast and film theatre (sometimes, as in this case, taking some of the advantages of cinema as well). It always seems sad to me when they assemble a dream cast for a production, have a completely awesome show for a while, then end the run without filming it, that production never to be seen again.

Anyways, Will Ferrell was great, and this is from someone who doesn't usually care for him. I find he usually over does, but this role pretty much can't be overdone. Matthew Broderick is nowhere near Gene Wilder, but somehow his performance didn't bother me (though from an analytical standpoint I could critique the heck out of it). As for Zero Mostel vs. Nathan Lane, I really can't fault either very much. Uma acted as ditzy as she was supposed to, and there's really nothing more to be said about that.

Overall, I have to admit that I perfer this musical movie to the classic film (unusual), but I'll admit to being a musical theatre affectionado.

Stay though the credits, by the way. The music is funny and there's a clip after they roll.

Um, yes. That was my point. They could have just kept it as a play. It was just like watching footage of that play.

However, it was a movie before it was a play. 1968 starring Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel, by Mel Brooks. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063462/

Yeah, it strikes me as really odd too: seeing a movie of a play of a movie. Why not just see the movie? And maybe then see the play. But to see a movie of the play of the movie after already having seen the movie and the play seems ridiculous to me.

The original film and cast were spectacular and while the new cast are fine actors in their own right(s), its just not as good as it was originally. Next they'll be making a movie of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels-The Play with John Lithgow and that other guy. :E Awful.

they did make a movie of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels starring michael caine and steve martin

but now they need a remake entitled:

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels-The Play

Starring Jim Carrey and Stifler from american pie

Hahaha! I know. That's literally exactly what I said.

The movie is tremendously great and it just doesn't make sense to go fiddling with it like they did with the original Producers movie. Just another way for uncreative Hollywood and/or Broadway types to make another buck.

ya but they can hardly be trusted to get any play/book/comic adaptation right ..but when they do it works out fabulously (I'm thinking of Apocolypse now)
