Hello again everybody...

Some friends and I are considering making a game in the Quake 1 engine BUT the plan is not solid because we are faced with 3 problems

1) We need a name
2) We need a storyline
3) We need a type of game (it wil be a FPS but it is too hard to explain)

So I am posting a poll for the 3rd problem...
Please do not post until you actually see the poll

If you would like to help in terms of the stroyline and/or name please PM me your ideas and you might be in our credits :smoking:

[Edit] If we do under-take this project the game, of course, will be free and I might give out Beta invites to test this game and eventually all of you can play it for free ^_^...

[Another edit] We are considering both Singleplayer and Online Multiplayer functions...

[Third and hopefully last edit] The game is gonna have intense gore, so if anyone can help us come up with a name it has to sound evil or gory

Dumb names I came up with

Choke
Prisoner #004123
D.T.M (Desent to madness)

space ship..

attacked by aliens.

starts war with aliens

ends at alien homeworld

voila, instant plot. have fun with the details. :D

There either has to be a very good story-line with fair action, or no story-line and insane action (UT2004), for me to enjoy.

Argh disaster!

I was gonna get the Quake 1 engine from someone and now they don't have it!!!

Anyone got a link to downlaod it or even better. An engine to a different game... I can put you in the credits ;)

Why not combine those? A good storyline can be combined with lots of action... like Surface Tension in HL, that did advance the storyline, yet was an action-packed level.

sooooo.....is this an excuse to delay it for 6 years?

I hope Vivendi dont come up and kick me in the balls and then take me to court...

But seriously we now need an engine. Kouler is the only other person that is a memeber of these forums that might make the maps for us...

If you want to help with textures or anything you can always ask...

Man talk about being a scab

I agree, a game should not be about sacrificing story-line for action or vice-versa it should be a perfect combination or "combine" :naughty: of both.....

therefore your fps should attempt to have action that is meaningful to the story and story that is meaningful to the action rather than just random sporadic action between story...... they should be one and the same...... a vessel travelling through the gamer's mind as they explore the universe that you ceate for them. Maybe this is why today we see so many crap games getting produced in a few months, selling like 2 copies and getting below 40% reviews.......

those games are seriously space fillers for magazines...forcing you to fork out more money for less information...... and more adds in between crappy reviews.....

anyway.....enough of me blabbing on...... :sniper:

That is what I aim for. A good storyline with good action but the action might not be the best since this is the first 3D game we ever made...

[EDIT] I was thinking of a game with combine in it =P but nah. I think this should be an original game...

No one goes to off-topic (metaphorically not litteraly) and besides 90% of the people who post on this forum are pretty smart

I think the storyline is very important. Make a story really deep. Things that could happen in real life. Invasion of Aliens, yes, but make it realistic. And the end is very important. An end that will surprise everybody.

Maybe post your opinion? I too late to change the poll now ;(

[Edit] Just wanted to thank everybody who voted... This is very useful :)

[Another edit] With these results we can determine on how much focus we can use on different things... I guess we will be putting quite some work into this storyline :afro:

[newish edit] Once I come up with good storylines I will put them into .txt files that you can download and then you can vote on a different poll on what storyline you would like...

names I have come up with

Goresnak
Goram
Gorm
Groaim
Choke
D.t.M (Desent to Madness)
Quak (Quake without an E =P)
If it breaths... choke it (crap I know)

...I said that is what I am aiming for but I can not achieve both

aha!!! i knew it my 6 year delay speculations were true....

see what you just said..... i'm not grasping at straws.....no...definetely not.......

anyway....MOD ON! :sniper:

I choose none of the above.
How about a game with great story and loads of action? I'm sure it's possible ;)

You're trying to put a product, based on an 8 year old engine into an already over-crowded market.

Your chances of success = 0. UNLESS you focus primarily on the storyline, and design the game around that.

We all wowed at Far Cry's graphics but the storyline was paper thin. With a decent storyline, characters you can grow attached to and a smooth playing experience, you'll do miles better.

Sadly, Half-Life 2 has already beaten you to it. You'll really have your work cut out, I'm afraid.

I don't get it either...

I have a bit of an idea and can you please just give me constructive criticism

You are in a prison-like location that has been over run and taken control of by the Soviets (Dosen't have to be Soviets) and maybe you are going to eventually be the hero and kick thier asses?

I am not selling the game if that is what you are thinking...

We are just making a game for the sake of it and then I wil just give it to you and everyone else...

Here's an example of what to do correctly - The Ship mod for Half-Life. Sheer class, and completely innovative. Sadly, there just aren't enough people playing it.

Kouler guess what, I can't get the Quake engine :(

Why put all that effort into making it then, if you're just going to give it to a few people? There has to be some purpose, a goal at the end of it - otherwise you'll have no direction.

Yogibbear said:
Just don't use soviets....so way over used......

then some random terrorist group that does not exist...

Mainly for experience incase I develop an interest into going into the gaming industry...

It is just something to do geez.

[Edit] Is it easy to use the Half-life engine? Or maybe the Quake 3 engine?

Heh... a rogue group of voodoo cultist masochists that have created their own terrorist group to take over the world!!!!!! :sniper::flame::sniper::flame: in a random island...like New Zealand (i know that's not random i'm only stirring!!!!)

hmm...

Maybe you are a hostage negociator (or the hostage taker) in some full intense situation :sniper: nah that sucks...

I guess we are going to have a FPS that has very deep storyline and has an average amount of action

I don't care that much about clichés. Talk about an overrated word... As Max Payne says: "Nothing is cliché when it's happening to you". There's a certain logic behind stating that only good enough stories turn cliché. Otherwise they wouldn't become clichés in the first place anyway. Right? Guess what I voted :D

I might make another thread so people can help me with the game's name...

Then I might be going somewhere after getting the engine

You missed the option of a lot of story and action.

you must have voted for; the duke nukem 1 engine with an epic storyline that is about as intense long and has lots of books for you to find and spend hours reading of the computer screen like in that game "batman:angelica returns to school to find spot"

I can't achieve both full on storyline and action...

Only 3 people are working on this game unless you count my dog as our mascot =P

Made the 2nd thread

what about the unreal engine? UT2004 is kinda swamped with mods, but if it's just for the experience who cares?

I'm thinking of doing a similar thing myself (mainly to get some games experience on my CV), but can't model for shit, good programmer and pretty good mapper, but arty I most definitely am not.

Buzz3D have some great vid tutorials on modding unreal if your interested. They also have vids on other stuff too. Great site.

To all the Quake 1 graphics nay-sayers
http://www.tenebrae2.com/screenshots/tenebrae2_tb-base_07.jpg
http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/shots8/quake00099.jpg

If you want to use Quake 1, it's best that you take advantage of one of advanced engine ports such as the ones shown above.

http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/
http://www.tenebrae2.com/

Another option is darkplaces but that is less technologically advanced then tenebrae (I think-actually I'm not sure at all).
http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/
http://www.inside3d.com/

Although the Quake 2 source code is also out and Quake 3 source is going to be released very soon (Not sure HOW soon maybe end of 2004/ early to mid 2005).

An example of what can be done with the q2 source code is below, take out everything fps and make a turn based squad game...How awesome.
http://www.ufoai.net/

Though, I'll be brunt and honest, if you haven't found the q1 source code you're either lazy or something else....and neither bode well for game making.

http://www.idsoftware.com/business/techdownloads/
q1 source code is what you want, bare in mind there's no art with it. It's only the code not game (i.e art, maps and so on) that's free.

Remember the best thing about using a game with free source code, is making it stand alone. No one needs to own the game to play your project.
