Someone abused the relationship that Gabe had been so kind as to foster and encourage, and now the honeymoon has ended with what I expect to be a divorce. So now, other game developers who had considered going down the same path, creating an open dialogue for the community to gain insight to forthcoming projects will think twice before even considering it.

It's really a shame. You could blame Valve for having poor security, or Gabe for not having his 'community' e-mail on a seperate computer, disconnected from the network, but the real party to blame for this will probably never be known, an individual who took advantage of a good thing and sunk it.

The reason I sound so downright disappointed is that for a while there I believed that Valve was setting a new standard, one that made watching the development of a game at a whole new level of anticipation.

It's a shame...a real shame.

How did you reach that conclusion? Surely nothing in the Ask Valve thread (which for me has been the major decent think Valve have done) has nothing at all to do with the fact that somebody Hacked into Valve.

I think it still says a lot that he has turned to the community for help :)

I don't think this will affect it, companies will probably simply use a little more security in the future. Also, I am almost 99% sure these assholes will be caught, really won't be hard seeing what IP accessed Gabe's computer, after that teh FBI will step in and trace where the real IP came from. My guess is there aren't very experianced hackers so they will be easy to trace.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT HE IS ASKING US FOR HELP!!!!!

Its kind of cool like we get to go on a mission for our master. lol

maybe if theres no more community/dev talk then we wont get delays 6 days from release that we cant stomach cos we got told consistently it would be out on time.

I agree though...they oughta seperate the computers that they're making the game on from the computers they're using to communicate with the community and even other devs.

but really I don't blame Valve since they've been victims of Hackers...
