Well, I just finished watching The Ring for the first time and it was pretty good. I know a lot of people on here are fans seeing by their little profile picture things. Anyway, I didn't really understand the ending. Why didn't the mother and son die? Someone please fill me in. Thanks.

They explained it a little better in the Japanese movie.
By making a copy, it's pretty much continuing the chain. Think of the Ring tape as a chain letter that kills you if you don't forward it.

The mom made a copy and gave it to her ex-husband, so she lived. After she realized this, she had her son make one. What they didn't show in the American film (that was shown in the Japanese film) was her heading to her dad's house, with 2 VCRs in the backseat of her car, the tape ontop of the VCRs, and a voice over of her calling her father saying: "Dad, I need a favor. It's for Yoichi." (Yoichi is the Japanese Hayden)

I much prefer how they finished the Japanese movie, although the same, it was more detailed and left less confusion

Yeah, the little girl wanted attention, so the message of the tape was: "Copy this tape and give it to someone else or you will die."

That way, the tape would eventually spread to the entire world and let her be noticed.
Damn good movie. I'd like to see the original version.

Edit: Also, the mother survived because she showed the copied tape to her son. The movie ends with the question of who the son will show his copy to so that he will survive.

I didnt find The Ring scary at all. Maybe Im just not the type that likes such movies.

I found it suspenseful and it's very well written and shot.
It may not have been flat-out scary to me but it was a well done, original movie.

i didn't have any trouble understanding the "make a copy or die" part from the US version...i mean...she forces her son to press the record button...it seemed pretty obvious to me...and none of the people that watched it with me asked that question.

honestly, i'm not calling you dumb, dark, just pointing out that it's not like the US version is vague in that regard...at least imo.

but i agree with ductonius...it wasn't scary. but i liked it because i really didn't know what was going to happen...a weird thing for the horror movie genre.

Ah, alright I see. Thanks for clearing it up for me guys. I kind of thought it was something like that. When I watched the part where the mother made the kid copy the tape, I thought they were just watching it again, not making another copy. Guess I need to watch it more closely next time.

I still say they should've kept the same (very) ending. Like I said, they showed that she was going to get her dad to watch the tape and save her son. The start of Ring 2 actually begins with the investigation of her father's death.. gee, wonder how he died

woah talk about an attention whore.. :imu:

I found it mildly creepy because I was *trying* to be scared by it :P

See Ringu, the original Japanese movie (If you don't mind subtitles), it's awesome!

Edit - Aha! I've been a Strider for 7 posts and I only just noticed it :D PWN!

Watching the US verison of The Ring spoils it for the original Korean Ring which is far far scarier, but only if you get to see it first. They should never have made a US version. And that Scary Movie 3 taking the piss out of it simply ruins things even more. Honestly Hollywood really do my head in sometimes :(

It was much better when Ring was simply well known in the east and hardly anywhere else. You could have fun sending the video tapes to people and ringing them after they watch it via your mobile. They'd not even know most of the time that it was from a film and be scared out of their wits.. can't do that now though :(

The Ring didn't have the same impact cause you found out too much too soon. Ring left a lot of that until Ring2. The Ring stuck a lot of extra info right into the first one. The originals you don't even get to see Sadako properly until Ring 0 (third one, but a prequel to the first) Sadako is a far creepier child before she dies than Samara was

and notice I said dies not murdered.. in the original Sadako is in the well for I think 30 years or something. How she survives is beyond me but that just makes it even spookier, that someone lasted that long in there. Not a nice way to go really heh.

Also the videotape in the US version uses FAR too much CG, which spoils it.. made worse that the CG looks CG.. The original video tape itself is creepy cause it looks genuine.. I've got it somewhere and the sound on it really does make you shiver. If someone wants to provide a few meg I'll send it to them to put up for people to get hold of (only place I found with it on is hosted on geocities, so kinda goes down if one person DL's it heh)

Ring2 (Korean version not the US one their doing now) is also worth checking out for a couple of pretty disturbing scenes including my favorite with Sadako peeking around the doorway *shivers*

I've heard a lot that people who've only seen the US version don't understand the ending.. But like a few of you, I don't get how thats possible, it makes it quite clear in a number of places in the last 10/15 minutes what she did that the others didn't do. The original does explain it better, but its still pretty obvious in the US one.

If you fancy a twist on Ring, go rent Rasen and check out the Ring virus series and TV movies. Rasen goes in another direction from Ring and sticks with scientific reasons behind it all.. It's quite a different film, not as good as Ring IMO but still worth checking out. It might be hard to find though as Ring did so well and Rasen did so badly they kinda buried it and pretendted it hadn't been made. It's an interesting twist and I think closer to the original stories (not sure though) and it does have a pretty creepy end. Which I wont spoil. But suffice to say the X-Files ripped it off in an episode ;)

You might also want to check out Ju-On BEFORE you see the Sarah Michelle Geller US remake (I don't care if they have the same original director, I just don't see the US one being any good).. That film is said to be even scarier than Ring. Heck even the trailers with the sound up at 3am gave me the jitters, especially for Ju-On 2.. Just go watch the trailers to the first two Ju-On films really late when your alone with the sound up *grins*

Wow I didnt know there was sequels..cool..I didnt find Ringu or the US version ver scary, but very intresting..actually me and my friend cracked jokes through both all the way through...lol I hid in my closet with a rag on my head pointing at a box..scared the shit outta him :D

I can host it for you if you like, I'd also be interested in seeing it.
Email to deadswitch at halflifearena dot com with a subject line of something like "[HL2.net] The original Ring video"

-rest of the post-

hit the nail on the head. i bet most people didn't even know there was an original Ring. what was the point? can't you lot read subtitles or something?

anyway, that trick with the phone is golden. tried it on quite a few people and worked everytime

a lot of people in the US are retards with short attention spans...that's how it's possible....no offense Dark Auro... :D

Actually wartching the US Ring first time through I didn't pick up on the "making a copy" thing either. I went back through and watched certain points and noticed it out of pure chance :P

I think the US version was way too cluttered, what in the hell was that about the horses anyway? There were so many things in there that were just added and not explained... and oh dear lord but the acting!!

Korean Sadako was 10x scarier too... American disfigurations were alright, first girl in the closet gave me the creeps but after that it was just OTT.

The girl in the closet, and the way her head fell forward, that was pure genius I'll admit and made me jump more than the same scene in the original (minus the skin problems) though I jumped on both :)

-
The connection with the horses was they could sense Samara's evil and would kill themselves to avoid it, kinda going mad. Or she would actually kill them herself because they kept her awake all night. The US video has her (sadako's) eye replaced with that of a horse's eye. The US video was too well thought out and everything was planned perfectly for it, which spoilt it, that and the use of CG atall in it. They even got rid of the towelheads (not a racist term for those who haven't seen the original) Few seem to realise those were actually very important to the story and were thrown out completely :\

The Ring was mostly Ring and bits of Ring 2. Like the scene with the girl in hospital but missing the proper flashback. As you say, too cluttered, there was a ton of info in The Ring you weren't supposed to learn until Ring 2. They put too much in it and left out too many of the best bits

I hate to think whats gonna happen with The Ring 2. It's supposedly a completely new storyline, so its likely gonna be rubbish ;(

Has anyone got a copy on their computer of the video tape from the American remake??
I'd like a copy of it.

Thanks for that.

If anyone else would like it they can find it here.
It's 5.8MB and is a zipped .mov Quicktime vid.

Fenric, I must ask, why do you keep referring to Ring/Ring 2 as Korean? They're Japanese, last I checked.
Considering every last fansite for the movies I've ever been to has labeled it as Japanese, I'd like to know where you get the Korean thing from? The only Korean film was "Ring Virus," which was just a remake of Ring for Koreans (which I heard sucked).

Also, I thought the overall creepiest scene in Ring 2 was when they were at the hotel, and Sadako's mother glided out of sight and peered back around the corner. It wasn't scary, it was just so.. weird, that it was creepy :)

Cause I used to call them Japanese for a long time then was told on number occassions from different places that they were infact Korean owned or made or something, so I started calling them that.. If I kept calling them Japanese you'd have jumped in and said I should call them Korean :p

And my avatar is STILL creepier than your sad copy hehe
