So I read that they were making a post apocaliptic movie with Viggo Mortensen based on a book. Since I love post apocaliptic flicks, I went and baught the book before the films comes out.

Throughout the reviews and elsewhere, I see words like profound, masterpiece, moving, Pulitzer Prize, Oprah. I must admit that these descriptions caused me to buy this book.

And I can tell you that I only read 30 pages before putting it down. This book is really really bad.

It's extremely cheesy. There is no punctuation really and incomplete sentences which makes the reading very choppy and hard to flow into. The book its full of little paragraphs ( no chapters) and every paragraph is about two sentences long. The dialog between the father and son is sooooo cheesy, example : " Papa, do you love me ?" " You are the only thing that stands between me and death my son" " What would you do if I died Papa?" " I would die too so I could be with you"....

This Amazon reviews describe pretty well how bad this book is.

HAs any one read it ?

Most of the shit in Oprah's book club are basically that, shit.

I was actually looking forward to this one , thanks for the heads up ! . This might be one of the few instances where a movie adaptation actually adds to the story .

I doubt I'm the only one that's going to back this up, but in my opinion Cormac McCarthy is a goddamn genius, and The Road is a rather astounding piece of literary art.

I'd highly encourage you to come back to it in a few years, and give it a read then.

I've read it and it's an amazing book by an amazing author, read more than 30 pages next time (I read the entire 300+ pages in one sitting the first time I read it).

I love that book :(. You'd probably get used to his writing style after a while.

Still, it's hard to explain away that sample of corny dialogue.

Yeah, I have to admit I cringed a little reading it here like that. Maybe it works better in context.

Speaking of post-apocalyptic books with unusual writing styles,

/plugs Riddley Walker

You read Riddley Walker.

I LOVE YOU. BABIES. HUNDREDS OF THEM.

Yes. Come back when you're older!
I'm not sure it's even a question of age....it might just be familiarity with McCarthy and the type of books that he and others write. You might need a little bit of experience with that type of literature to take it at more than face value.

I should say I know nothing of this man and his bookses. You're probably right; I was attempting to take the michael.

I was attempting to take the Michael, I was attempting to take the Michael.... I was attempting to take the Michael?

What in the name of Pete does that phrase mean Sulk?

I only buy books from Amazon that have the preview thingy. Unless I know for sure it's good.

I use the library. And then I consider buying. Books can be pretty expensive nowadays. That said, I actually purchased The Road, to give to someone else.
