The Road

I think it's going to rule. My brother read the book and said it was fantastic...I need to get that asap.

Except those pesky action scenes with the RPGs, cause you know they totally had those in the book.

Fantastic book - the best I've read this year, actually - but goddamn that trailer is horrendous. It's a shame it's had to be made to look like Fallout 3 and I Am Legend when in actual fact, it couldn't be any more worlds apart.

As a few people said in the other thread, though, it seems the film is to be nothing like the horrible advertising which I'm thankful for. Quite looking forward to this.

Read the book. This movie looks to be having some bad marketing (and hopefully that's all it is), and I'll see how it turns out, but for the love of gees, read the book.

OK! I'll read the book already! :E

But this still looks awesome. I didnt care for I am Legend so I am hoping this will give me a nice post-apocalyptic fill.

WTF is up with all these post apocalyptic movies in such a short time span.
Also LOL at Viggo Mortensen, perfecting that hobo look I see...

Agreed. I absolutely cannot watch the trailer with the sound on without cringing and crying a little inside for the book, which is one of my favorites. With sound off, it is somewhat ok though, although there are some really questionable things. Like, where is all the ASH?! They're supposed to be wading through deep drifts of ash, and the air is supposed to be so ashy that after a few minutes of breathing through a cloth, the cloth is already dirty. But there is no ash in the trailer, and then it doesn't really make sense that...

the man has a really bad cough/lung disease

And without a sky clogged with ash, you lose all the really depressing stuff in the book about the sun being "banished"/a grieving mother with a lamp.

On imdb some people said the trailer looks just like a couple of hobos wandering through the forest in the winter, which you can see in a completely normal non-postapocalyptic world. Remus's comment seems to confirm that reaction :p. Everything's supposed to be DEAD and at the moment, it's not. There's some speculation that the delay from last year was to make it darker, so hopefully that happens.

Hmm, all of you saying the book was great...did any of you read Blood Meridian? Imho, it is some of the most well-written language I have ever seen along with some of the most brutal violence I have ever read. My friend has read this and said that The Road was AWFUL in comparison. I am now more wary but will likely still read it before the film anyway.

I have Blood Meridian, excellent book. The Road is still my favorite by McCarthy though, followed by No Country for Old Men.

The trailer is not promising, but I still have hopes the movie will be decent. If any of you see this movie before reading the book I am going to destroy you.

Ah, well that bodes well for the book at least. Not sure about the film though...:(

I've read both Blood Meridian and The Road, and liked The Road better. Blood Meridian has a lot more description in it, whereas The Road is completely stripped down so the emotional impact is more concentrated. Blood Meridian is much more brutal though, in a visceral sense. The Road has a couple of fairly horrifying scenes but overall the style is more poetic than brutal.

Embedding disabled. RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAH.

Whats so special about this? I never read the book. I read the description on IMDB and it seemed like nothing special.

A bunch of new clips have come out recently: http://www.traileraddict.com/tags/the-road

I'm not sure whether I like them or not. There's something weird about the timing on some of these -- it just doesn't seem like it fits with how the book presented things, like....

When the road gang dude grabs his son and gets shot in the head, the book made it seem like it the man shot him immediately without thinking, but in the clip he spends a few seconds aiming the gun and then he shoots. Maybe it was in some kind of non-apparent slow motion. Either way, it felt a little strange.

Also, there's a ridiculous amount of product placement. I was ok with them showing the can of Coke in the trailer because that's actually in the book, but the scene in...

...the cellar (the one with all the food) is full of brand names everywhere, like Vitamin Water. And the boy's "thank you" to the people who left the food got turned into some kind of comic relief scene involving mispronunciation of "Cheetos" and the man chuckling. What the heck?!

Comparison:
Book:
The boy sat staring at his plate. He seemed lost. The man was about to speak when he said, Dear people, thank you for all this food and stuff. We know that you saved it for yourself and if you were here we wouldnt eat it no matter how hungry we were and we're sorry that you didnt get to eat it and we hope that you're safe in heaven with God.
He looked up. Is that okay? he said.
Yes. I think that's okay.

Film:
Boy: Umm, thank you for soup and Chee-toss
Man: Chee-toes
Boy: And all this stuff... people
Man: [chuckles]

I really hope the last sentence is still in the film and they just cut the clip short.

Also it seems pretty apparent now that there is no ash in the film.

Wait... there are hl2 fast zombies in this movie? Theres one at the 2 minute mark of the trailer.

The trailer looked good and since I didn't read the book, I don't have any specific expectations for it that would not be met (as was the case for example with The Bourne Identity which was a good movie, but left me disappointed, as I read the books first).

Yay for the "YOOUUUUARGHHHH!" scream (whatever the name of it is) at 2:02-2:03.

Wow a lot of u ****ers have read the book version. The trailer looks interesting.

The book is a very simple read - it's easily readable in a day. However, I say ''easy'' when I myself could not read it in one sitting because on a few occasions it felt like quite a thrill reading it and there were times when it left me so drained of emotion at some of the events that I had to put it down and pick it up again the next night. There's some very, very disturbing scenes amongst the sadness.

I love it so much.

Stuff I like I usually only read a couple chapters of a day. 1 day reading is something I've grown to see as an insult to savory.

I read the Road in a day (one sitting actually, only about 4 hours) and I am happy I did it that way. I love the feeling of conquering an entire book in one go, you can't get that deeply involved in it any other way.

Yeah you can, its call pacing. I've done both ways for a while and I've ended up sticking to this because it's most satisfying.

I do that too, but for books that REALLY take control of me like The Road did I usually end up reading them in one long submerged go. Its good, it put me in the most intense mood for the rest of the day (well, night by that point).

The book scared me, to be honest. Which I liked and have no problem with - it's amazing it could do that. I love it for doing it. There was parts I just couldn't continue to read in one sitting but in the long run when it comes to books, I do prefer to read them in segments. Gives me something to do as I don't buy many books due to being far too picky.

The empty house... the basement... good lord.

The first time I read it was in one night (well, probably into the early hours of the next morning as well) with a break to get dinner. The second time I stretched it out over a week or so. Both ways were good. I think I read it fast the first time because I wanted to know what happened and didn't want to stop reading. The second time, I already knew what happened, so I took my time and was able to sit on some of the passages I really liked.

The empty house... the basement... good lord.

Indeed. When I hit that part (about 12 at night as I tend to read before bed) I found I had to carry on reading and ended up polishing the book off sometime stupidly early in the morning (fortunately it was a Sunday). Its rare a book grips me that much, but I found myself really invested in the characters well being after that.

u bums, I'm gonna pick this shit up from the library tomorrow. Thanks a lot.

Enjoy. I'm going to read it again soon, right after I finish House of Leaves

It's gonna be a while.

I got this shit but I don't have time to read it cuz of ****in schoolwork, ****. Shit I'll probably read it late at night.

Heh, and then you'll read a little too much and then end up staying up all night reading it, and then you'll tell your friends and they'll do the same, and the evil sleepless meme will travel through your neighbourhood ;)

Ok you mugs were right, I tried to read like 10-20 pages and read 60. Probably would've read more if it wasn't 4:30 am. Shit's addicting and I'm not sure why.

To be fair, 60 pages of The Road is probably the equivalent to 10 or 20 pages of any other normal book. :p Not that I dislike that, of course.

Heh, the first time I opened it, I was like, "What the heck... is this double-spaced?"

Enjoyed the book thoroughly. I hope the movie will be awesome, but I am expecting a failure.

Finished the book a few days ago, really wondering how they'd pull a movie off without adding too much stuff in or destroying the mood its supposed to be.

reading the book now and its a really easy read. everytime i put the book down though i want to read more

edit: movie is coming out November 25th in the US

The movie comes out next week. Anyone going to see it? It seems to have been switched to a limited release :|

Here's the latest trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4aNZGniOG4

They changed the music in the trailer to something WORSE than the old one. I didn't think it was possible, but they managed to do it. The last minute is completely laughable. Fortunately this is not the actual movie music. Unfortunately there really are voiceovers.

Silly as the trailers may be, they do keep revealing some really, really cool looking parts that get me all excited for bleakness. The truck on the bridge looks wonderful.
