I was wondering if we will get the tools boxed with the game? As I have a crappy 56k connection and would hate to have to download huge files.

Also anyone taking bets on how big the sdk download and hammer download will be (just in case)... I just want to build my own custom levels to play around in. Probably never publish anything online, but thats half the fun of the game for me...

ahh! your avatar is trying to grab my crotch.

we really don't know when the first version of SDK or hammer is coming, valve have said 'soon' lately. i dont think it will come with the retail package though. im betting it comes out before 2005 though. cant wait to start mapping, etc.

I don't know for sure, but I think you will have to wait and download it. You could try downloading it on someone elses connection and burning it to a CD.. I don't know exactly how big it will be though.

Wonder if your vid card has to support pixel shading in order to map. If not I might buy HL2 and mess around with mapping until I can afford a 9800 pro. (AKA never)

I want to try making a map for CS:S. Is it hard making maps?

It depends on how you define hard.

And I believe that if you can run the old Hammer (and you should) you should be able to run the new one as well.

i doubt it will be hard
if learned hammer without any tutorial

If you have a friend with a good connection, you could possibly have him or her burn you everything that you need. That's what I do for my poor, 56k friend.

its not hard per se, its just time-consuming if you want to make it look good, especially now with source engine. if you get a good tutorial, it just takes time to learn the concepts.

one of the key things though about mapping is making the level playable on even low end pcs. very important!
