there seems to be a bit of confusion about the second test, what it is, what the first test was etc. people keep starting new threads, and people keep comming into the irc channel (#secondtest on quakenet) asking the same questions, so WaryWolf and myself decided to make a FAQ about it, which will hopefully clear a few things up:

edit: if one of the mods wants to put a link to the faq in the secondtest sticky, that'd be useful.
 
Ok well first off the 'First Test' on the faq isn't the first test. When Merc visited that was the first test. As I had said before and I'll say it again, Greg said there was nothing important on the whiteboards when shm0zy had visited, it isn't a part of the test.
 
Thanks for the rehashing. I had been out of the loop with the second test, so this was nice to read. :)

i still dont get how was the first test discovered?
what did Greg send in an email? a full text? of what
 
You forgot how the password for the first test led to the co-ordinates of City 17 on a map.

I'm not getting involved with this, but are there any clues over why a car should be the username/password?
 
so the test is that you waste your time to figure out username and password and when you finally make it, a picture comes and says you've passed the test and nothing more?

BS ignore this test, complete waste of time.

good point actually, FAQ update with why the password is 'nova prospekt'

There is no PHP in the image. 2 PHP script were used to sort the image information, but nothing was find therein. (for example: http://www.ozhiker.com/electronics/...php?filename=http://www.darkbulb.com/gman.jpg)

- decrypting the JPEG using multiple programs
- searching for hidden files in the JPEG using multiple programs
- searching the headers in the JPEG

why did you describe the same thing 3 times? :p

The only location that can cantain files/text is the header (AFAIK). In this case it only contained plain undecrypted text. Some thought (wrongly) that the password meant that the image contained an encrypted code (wich would be impossible because there was already undecrypted code in it, namely the pass itself)


Further things that have been tried were using the user/pass combination for steam and http/ftp logins (for both h-l2.com and steampowered.com). Also people have tried the other files in the GCF (like txts). All to no avail ofcourse.

The main idea at the moment is that future prepreloads will include more clues...

that part of the faq was quoted directly from icarus's post in the secondtest sticky thread.

and i agree with you about not having all the info yet, and having to wait for the next preload, yet still people are exclusively finding that 'omg if you look at the source theres an ascii picture of gordon!!!11!! is this the next test?????///?' every 10 minutes.
 
Note: The phrase is "password", not "user/pass". So i would assume the password is "nova/prospekt" not user: "nova", password: "prospekt"... although they might have said it wrongly. Try both combos with whatever ideas you have.
 
So far it returns the same as the first test, the page hasn't been changed....
It still says you passed the first test...

One can wonder at why they changed this though, maybe a new page will go up soon.

I am sure that it didn't work before, as its the very first thing I tried (and im sure countless others tried) when the second test was found
 
yes, that one is well documented, good to keep going over things though, in case that they change.

Im sure something will happen shortly about this..
