well i got my new seagate. back to 7200 rpm :( and its 160 gigs is really 137 but hey whatever. ok so now for some reason, even after defragment, my comp runs really slow. no virus's or anything. when i play games, any game, wheter it be ut2k4 or cs or hl2 or anything, the game stutters evers half a minute or so, and after about 10 stutters the game freezes and exits back to desktop. when looking at picutures, i get a system error if i dont let the preview picture on the side of the window load first before double clicking to see it completlely. movies sometimes dont load and just freeze the media player. movies stutter, take minutes to load most of the time. just a series of annoying things are happening and i dont know why. does anyone have any ideas? i know 7200rpms cannot be THIS slow. whats the matter? ;(

EVAR lol

hmm, dosnt sound like it is HDD, what are other spec of your comp ?
temps ? OC ?
and for spyware, check with microsoft anti spyware beta, spybot , and with ad aware.

Are you using an older conductor 40 IDE cable?? That makes things really slow. And if you're not using an old IDE cable, then it might just be a bad HDD.

well i have an fx-53 so i dont think theres a processor problem lol. i am using an IDE cable since its not SATA, but idk if its an old ide thingy. my specs are:

fx-53 s939
a8v mobo deluxe
sapphire x800 xt platinum
audigy 2 zs sound card
1024mb corsair xms pc3200
160 (137gig) seagate hd (ide)

temperatures are normal:

IDLE
cpu: 45c
mobo: 30c

LOAD
cpu: 50c
mobo: 30c

try replacing with some other HDD, if it is in HDD, replace it with better Seagate 7200.8 (sata) ncq, it pairs with raptor on performance and you have bigger space 200 , 250, 300 Gb.

i did have a raptor. i still do. its sitting on my bedroom floor lol. problem is it got the trojaned the shit out of. idk if its repairable, but is there a place i can bring it to get repaired?

Have you reformatted it?

cant. the comp doesnt detect it as a drive anymore.

Did you use the setup that came with the drive to get it over 137GB? That's a windows thing. I just got a 300GB and when you pop it in and load it up it also shows as a 137GB.
I just undid my partition/format that I did and then in windows I used the CD that came with it and now it shows as a 300GB drive, well 279GB anyway.

Also if it's sharing the same cable as another Harddrive, maybe put it on the 2nd IDE cable. All IDE cables have 40pins so don't count those but the faster IDE cables use more wires in the ribbon part. The faster cables have 80 small wires while the slower cable has 40 thicker wires. If you are using the one that came with the harddrive then it should be a 80wire IDE cable.

yea its an 80 wire one. and its weird, cuz right now the comp is running top speed pretty much. it happens when it feels like happening... :-\

well guess what, my new seagate crapped out on me too! went into standby and never came back basically. it gives me a bunch of different fun errors. but either way my home computer is once again inaccessable. im thinking the trojan is somewhere ELSE other than my harddrive. perhaps in memory? thus im gonna have to take it somewhere to get repaired. this time the problems are either: blue screen of death right after windows 2000 says its starting up, or HARD ERROR, SYSTEM ERROR message two seconds onto the desktop. Now I get the lovely NO BOOT SECTOR DETECTED or whatever. its lovely, it really is. so now while i get my seagate repaired, i might as well get my raptor repaired. someone CAN repair the drives and fix/clean my comp from whatever the hell else is wrong with it right?

If you took your other drive out and put this one in then I doubt it's a virus. It wouldn't be in memory because nothing stays in memory when you shut your machine off or restart.

why would the comp start up and everything else but the hd be running normally if its the psu? the disk is definately damaged somehow cuz no matter what when i try to load even safe mode it says no boot sector or corrupt boot sector or whatever else it says in the blue screen of death. so now i have two busted hd's here. i can bring/send them somewhere to get repaired right?

update: oh who am i kidding..there are no updates. im still computer-less 2 weeks later with a 74g raptor and a 160g seagate both sitting on my computer desk dead. my friend is coming over to take a look at it, hopefully a boot disk or something will work. he said it could be the motherboard. is that possible? :dozey:

BIG UPDATE!!!

im home and on the comp! i fixed my seagate! turned out to be an inaccessible boot sector. so i popped in my win2k cd and ran the windows repair thing and it actually fixed it. how does a boot sector just run corrupt like that anyway?

still no sign of life for my raptor, but i do wanna get that up and running again too. if i do, does it need win2k as well? or can i have windows xp on it? i want to use the seagate to store everything and the raptor to run everything. is that possible?

zeroing? what/how is/do i do that?

its better than any format, fdisk etc. it turns all 1s into 0s on drive, so there is no trace of anything left on the harddrive. there are many programs out there that do it, but i just use one of the utilities from the 'ultimate boot cd':

http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/

a lot of good tools on that cd, too
