Has anyone else seen this?

I was wathching something in KCTS and how this guy named Brian Green(SP?)
hosted this show sponsored by NOVA and talked about the String Theory.
It basically began with Isaac Newton and his discovery of gravity, then how that theory become unified and then later on with Albert Einstein unifying 3 other theory-I forgot, but it was something like a Strong and Weak Atomic theory and the Electro-Magnetic theory.
Then scientists thought of a string theory-it was dismissed then brought back to life around 1984. And they finally unified the theory and called it the "M" theory(Probably for absolutely no reason because they don't know what the M stands for) and then how this theory comes at a "price". Cause after looking at the string theory, that would mean there are 11 dimensions! And also parallel universes with even more weird/different laws of physics-so yes! that would mean a universe with planets dominated by floating pie!

So, what's your take on this? It would help even more if you had watched this stuff on KCTS and could help out with the discussion, I just watched it recently and may have forgoten some things.
The string theory suggests that there are little "strands of strings" smaller than atoms and how they can help scientists figure out more stuff.

I thought the String theory said that there were 5 other dimensions?

Actually, at first, they fought there were 5 theories, but then realized that they were all just different ways at looking at the string theory.
1 Dimension of time
3 Regular dimension we can see-up, down/left, right/fowards,backwards.
6 dimensions spawned by the string theory
and 1 other one

wait, so john titor is in fact a floating pie?
He's from the future.
The String Theory suggests there may be parallel universes.
And yes...he is a floating pie.

The other 7 dimensions are rolled up incredibly small.
They also think our universe is nothing but a huge string, feeded by energy until it grew so large as our universe. Those are membranes, and I think that's why it's called M-Theory. They think that gravity 'leaks' of our membrane onto other dimensions, that explains why it's such a weak force.

But yeah, I've seen the documentary, it's pretty cool to watch.

It's viewable here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/elegant/program.html (3 hours)

But no one knows if the theory is right, and there are no real experiments to test it, so opposers say it's more philosophy than science.

Brian Green's book on String Theory, "The Elegant Universe" is absolutely fascinating. One of the best non-fiction books I've ever read actually.

This is exactly correct.

Ooooh... one other one...

I wonder what it does?

It's a world called Adelpha. And Cutter Slade still hasn't come back from there to stop the Earth falling into the dimensional breach.

[* still pissed they're cancelled Outcast 2 *]

It's the only game I know of that used superstring theory as part of the setup plot.

Who the hell is this John Titor guy?

And I saw the NOVA show about String Theory and read a popular Science magazine about it also... Its amazing that someone would think this up, but in my opinion, he is just pulling this crap outa his ass. None of it even comes close to makeing sence, but then again it doesn't have to.

So IMO String Theory=Interesting BS

Oh and didnt he talk about a way to communicate through the paralled dimensions with gravity because that is the only thing that can travel between dimesions? LOL I mean come on...

We watched that in my AP Physics class a couple weeks ago... very interesting.

Heh, seems this theory is interesting and nothing else :dozey:

So this means... everything is full of tiny strings, and the universe is made a string... and floating pies! Cats love string, right? It's cats! They're holding all the answers from us!!

/me discects his cat.

/me eats floating pie.

You know i think since this thread was made, the worldwide intellectual level of discussion just rose a point, its that deep. I mean, wow its all gone over my head.

And John Titor is a guy who supposedly came from the future.

Ohh ok so thats who that guy is... is his brother Marty Mc Fly?

I think the thread title should be "The String Theory and how it revolutionizes Science... only in theory" :p

I usually pick this kind of stuff up pretty quickly, all i have picked up are bits of string ruling the universe and parallel universes full of floating pies. Now the thought of string ruling the universe bothers me immensely but the thought that there is a universe out there filled with lots of pies intrigues me.

I was actually being sarcastic considering the number of silly comments such as "John Titor is a floating pir"

KCTS 9 - heh. that in seattle? I watched KCTS 9 a lot in seattle. Public television at its finest. Haven't been back there in a loong time. Its funny how little things like that make you remember stuff.

John Titor is not a floating pir, he's a floating pie which is a totally different thing!

I'm sorry I contributed to the spam ;(

I deserve pie!

So do the pies eat people?

Is there any evidence supporting the string theory or anything about the 11 dimensions.

Not sure, I think there may be. But the theory has been unified.
That was done with physics.

well opponents of m-theory say there is no way to test/experiment with superstring theory. but there is a way to test it, which is to look for the graviton, if they find it... then yay m-theory is at least somewhat accurate. what m-theory will do if it's correct, is it will unify all four forces in physics. the idea is to unite them in a way that they aren't forces. this is done by going up into higher dimensions. best example = gravity, it is no longer a force if you're 5th dimensional, it becomes a warping of space/time, not a force. so the idea is that as you go into higher dimensions, the 4 forces become resolved into non-forces and supposedly easy to unify. a unified field theory or GUT(grand unified theory) REVOLUTIONIZES physics. suddenly the mysteries of the cosmos become clear, the big bang, what may have come before, the future of our universe, the true nature of time, extra dimensional things, like other universes... all of that becomes understood shortly after m-theory is solved(if it's correct of course). that's how it revolutionizes physics...and science in general. it's all in search of the mother of all theories(m-theory at the moment). one major issue with all this(if you listen to sayy.... michio kaku) is that string theory was "discovered/theorized/whatever" 100 years too early. which is why, supposedly, no one is smart enough to solve the complex equations involved. go 100 years into the future as we're more advanced and computers advance, then we can solve it. but for now, we're left fumbling around in the dark, kinda, for answers that we don't have the technology to find(maybe the graviton fits into this?) anyways, even if we were to solve m-theory, the practical applications of technology are so far down the road that it doesn't really matter TOO much for this current generation. maybe by the time we're all old feeble people, there would be some fledgeling techs that can take advantage of superstrings. ...what i mean is like... let's say we find out how to open worm holes with m-theory, we still wouldn't have the tech. since the energy requirements are supposed to be enormous.

edit: changed something for clarity, oh by the way, anyone else that knows more about this, please add to what i've said... i haven't really had time to read up on string theory much in the past couple years so... yeah.

No offense, but I think scientists with Phd's in about everything are in a slightly better position to judge whether something is bullshit or not.

It would be interesting, wouldn't it, to recieve a coded message that makes the recipient ten times heavier...
