I dont like having a look at screenshots/videos of a game I have been waiting to have for ages. I just like to find out myself in the game. Thats why I had many surprises.
Barney and his what looks like a new look - You can see Barney has been fighting for ages by the dirty look on his uniform. I did not expect that.
Alyx's zombie humour - calling the Combine Soldier 'zombine' was cool. Also, I did not expect to see any new creatures. I didn't know there were 'zombines' in this, nice idea.
The ending - major surprise. Left on a cliffhanger, just like Half life 2. I didn't expect it to end so soon.

Anyone else had certain surprises? You didnt know something was in there?

I'd read through the story several times before I got to play it, so no real surprises there, but I had no idea the HDR would be so beautiful. @_@

There were places I just had to stop playing, stare at the screen, and just drool for a while. I got killed by a Stalker 'cos I was just watching the unbelievably amazing shininess that was the citadel core.

The transmission. I had no idea that was the reason behind the Core meltdown. That was the biggest...suprise, so to speak. There was very little else that really made me go "Ohh!". That and the pods escaping at the end. Though I suppose I sort of expected that.

The goggles, they did nothing.

Willie, you are so awesome.

The biggest suprise? Try the escort bit at the end, because that just shocked me..

I realise you might not know this so in case you don't (NOT a spoiler) Episode 1 is just a PART of a game. You get EP1, EP2 EP3, and if they make one, EP4. All put together and played one-after-the-other, they make ONE whole game. That is why it was so short.

Congratulations on actually avoiding having the game spoiled for you. I remember when it came out, I had to wait another month to get it retail (NZ gets stuff after the rest of the world because we live on the ass-end of the planet). I didn't buy off Steam, because I like to have a box and disc, as something physical to show for my spent $$.I would come to these forums as usual, and morons were posting threads about EP1 EVERYWHERE, not just in the EP1 forum. Even in the hardware forum.

And even the thread TITLES were spoilers, like "omg alyx LIVES!!!1", "barney gets away!" "saving the rebels is hard!!!" or "Stuck trying to blow up the citadel core", "dark room, combine-zombies help plz" etc. I didn't want to know if they lived, or if you had to go back into the citadel etc. Some of the threads seemed innocent, like "Steam problem" in the main HL2 forum, so I would click on it to see what problem I might also encounter when starting up Steam, only to read things like "so i was out of the the citadel and got past the cool part with the power balls that you use to activate those cool bridges before you destroy the citadel core and then save the rebels, when my Steam exe crashed. any ideas guys?" I had read most of it before I realised they were talking about EP1.

Man, there were some frustrating times back then. Sure, I could have avoided any site to do with a valve game at all, but why should I have to change MY surfing habits because of a few morons? I also didn't realise that stupidity was so rampant until that week of waiting.

Anyway, congratulations.

My mates down in Napier atm... Anticipation for a game is alright, but, yes, being told all that's gonna happen sucks. For episode three I'm just not going to read or look or do anything to spoil it.

Shasta is so... evil!

/EDIT Well, not evil. Fustrating? Cynical. Ah, I know - angry.

I understand what you mean. Until I completed the game, I stayed out of the Episode One forums to avoid anything that might spoil my gameplay. I just didnt expect so many surprises.

lol why on earth would you do that?

One of the biggest surprises was that the Advisor red room was brought back. I've been messing with Valve's leaked VMF files and I was looking at some prototype citadel maps and there was somekind of red room, and it was cool. And they brought it back. Also the new atmossphere was kind of cool, when it was always red and black sky, with a half-blewn citadel in background.

There was alot of surprises, like what the Zombines could do, but damn you Valve for showing one screenshot in Steam News before it.

I only didn't like the preloading when idiots got to the GCF and found some files like "alyx_zombine01.wav" and then I knew there was going to be such creature. Would've been fun to see somekind of thing like it.

The graphics weren't so cool because first time I played the game I had to skip the first map because I had bug when Dog pulls Gordon out, and the Core was only white ball. I used GeForce MX 440. But now when I have played it 2 times with 6800GT and all in High, it was really cool.

But even if you do go over the game info endlessly beforehand, it's still awesome, usually. You know some of what's going to happen but you don't know when or how... And that's what makes it a great game.

Another surprise is when you see a screen-recording of Breen in the Citadel speaking to the advisor. I couldnt see it because of my graphics card and not being able to see people on screens, but when I saw playthroughs, I saw. Cool.

Might be a good idea to crack down on that come release.

The thing was, I DID stay out of the EP1 forums. These were posts just plastered all over the place. And because even the thread titles were spoilers, even the (few) posts that were in the EP1 forum still had an effect - you know how on the main HL2.net forum home page, each forum lists the last post, and the thread title? Well sometimes I would accidentally skim over those, and see that someone had posted in "stuck where dog throws u an alyx back into citadel" or some worse spoiler. Surely the level name and "stuck" would have been a better title, and then go into more detail IN the thread.

Samon - I really hope that the mods have a plan to get all this sorted out before EP2 is released. I remember sometimes it took days for blatant spoiler threads to be moved to the EP1 forum. I know you all can't be here all of the time etc, but hopefully you guys come up with a good way to sort it out quickly...

Definantly. Swirly, swirly, swirly... and Breen's voice first instead of the G-Man's.

The beginning was awesome. I had no idea about it...

I definitely know what you're talking about. I want to keep clean for Ep 2..as much as possible. I know too much already, and it's not that much!

The intro. The vortigaunts, specifically, and the implication that they in fact have different intentions than the Gman.

As for spoilers, I'll read the stuff revealed by Valve in interviews and look at the media they release. Valve knows how to give enough info to maintain interest and not spoil their games. I just don't want to read what some twit on the forums found rummaging through the GCF. I actually made a point to avoid reading the forums AT ALL until I finished Ep1.

Meh, I basically knew every major event in Episode One before I played through it.

Yeah, but what we were given to expect... :D

My biggest suprise was at the trainstation, when you're about to turn the valve, and the strider just pops up from nowhere. I was sceared shitless :cheese:

The Samuel
"I've had it with these mother ****ing Zombine in this mother ****ing tunnel!"

When Episode Two is avalible for pre-load on steam and that, I am absolutly staying out off the forums and half life related websites because I want to find out myself what happened to the citadel, Alyx and Gordon.

Just playin through the game again, and for the first time I realized Alyx can actually stomp on a headcrab making a nice *crunch* sound.

the whole thing is pretty nice to play!!!
I love this game!!!
