After reading the latest interview from Sweden, I felt that it was necessary to start up a TF2 related topic. From the interview with Gabe:

How are things progressing with TF2?

It's going well, we are at the finishing stages of that development process as well. After ECTS 1999, we decided to put that aside and focus on starting development of HL2. Later, after we were done with the source engine, we continued work on TF2

For as long as I can remember, TF2 has been a complete mystery. A lot of HL2 fans believe that TF2 is the core multiplayer behind HL2, and that it'll ship with HL2 on Day 1.

After reading this quote, that idea is entirely possible.

It makes perfect sense. I think that it's 100% impossible that Valve will ship HL2 with CS Source or any of the other ports as the core multiplayer. Common sense would suggest that Valve needs to ship with something new and fresh. The ports are still games we've played before, only with massive graphics updates. I'm not saying the ports won't ship alongside HL2, we know thats going to happen. But as for the core multiplayer, TF2 now seems like the logical choice.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: I know about the quote from Gabe that said TF2 would be standalone. But I think that was just to throw us off.

I know that they said before that it would be standalone, but who knows, maybe that was just to throw us off.

i think you are reading too much into this.

if tf2 wasnt going to be hl2's multiplayer...newell wouldnt lie and say no its actually a standalone game

hed just say no comment

the thing ive been wondering about is, they seem open to discuss (at least in some way) all of there future products, they even discuss future expansions, half-life 3, the source ports etc.

But they seem completely "wait and see" about TF2, I would love it if it was HL2's mp, because it would be somthing new rather than the updated stuff.

To be honest I will be happy aslong as HL2s original purchase comes with multiplayer.

TFC is going to source around the same time HL2 comes out just like the rest of the mods they are planning to release. No way in hell would they ship TF2 with HL2...just isn't likely. As for me that would be the greatest suprise, but so very doubtful. Although, it is very strange they dont talk about TF2. I dont understand.

TFC Source is a technological port of TFC, which is a technological port of TF o.O

lol, anyway TF2 should be somthing a bit new and different, i expect it will use vehicles and other clever features more widly than the source ports will.

tf2 is all about fast paced, fun gameplay. in a team fortress game you dont get killed if you get hit by a rocket, cos, well, its not trying to be pseudo realistic counter strike.

its not trying to cos its a better more fun game, and dont we all know it, oh yes!

TF2 is supposed to be a tactical experience like Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon isn't it? I thought it was supposed to be very realistic because of all the old shots which showed guys in army uniforms shooting stationary machine guns and other more life-like things. Maybe it isn't supposed to be as relistic as Rainbow Six 3, but something like that right?

Something just occured to me: TF2 was announced way back when TFC was like the #1 mod for HL. Fast forward to today, where between then and now Counterstrike has become the most popular online game, ever. I'm not suggesting this definately makes TF2 a back-burner project or anything, I'd just understand if they weren't as gung-ho about it today as they were in 1999.

Still, I'd prefer a clean, fresh HL2DM over any port, and I hope that CS:Source isn't the default MP mode.

You think that they took CS and made it into a Retail game and yet you think they will just pass TF2 free as HL2's multiplayer? I am not so sure about you.

They make full games to make money.
This will also be something that is an advantage for the steam subscription available.

the reason i doubt that tf2 will be hl2's mp, is that they keep saying that they want to concentrate on the story and make it so where you care about the characters, i think that the reason that tf2 will undoubtfully not be hl2's mp is that it just doesn't fit in with the hl universe story wise, if they did add it on it would feel like a slap on, well kinda

I would love just one screen shot of TF2, just give me some kind of hope that it is real.
