the good news

"A 20-year-old whose lawyers claimed the video game “Grand Theft Auto” and childhood abuse caused him to kill three small-town police officers was convicted Tuesday of capital murder.

The jury deliberated for just over an hour before convicting Devin Moore.

While the judge barred jurors from hearing testimony linking the 2003 shootings to the game, defense lawyer Jim Standridge reminded them that Moore, after his arrest, told police, “Life is a video game; everybody has to die sometime.”

Prosecutor Lyn Durham said Tuesday that Moore knew what he was doing when he grabbed a patrolman’s gun and killed two officers and a radio dispatcher.

“And he knew it was wrong,” she said."

the bad news:

"The victims’ families have filed a civil suit against the video game manufacturer and two stores, claiming Moore killed the three after repeatedly playing “Grand Theft Auto III” and “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.” No trial date has been set in the civil lawsuit"

Why, aren't there laws against telling the jury things that the judge says shouldn't be told to them?

What the ****!? If they ban video games, they also need to ban movies. And violent radio shows. And everything else on this godforsaken planet.

The next kid that uses the "video games made me do it" defense should get the gas chamber, even if he just assaulted someone, regardless of the crime, gas chamber.

naither of those reasons seems very feasible to me, just because you were abused as a child doesn;t mean you go out and kill people, it's just ridiculous

But (and this is an opinion from a person with no pyschological education) I believe that being abused is more likely to make you have wonky brain waves rather than playing on your joy station, or whatever you kids call it nowadays.

but still, there's no valid excuse for killing someone unless you were in danger of being killed yourself, that's the only real reason i can think of, anything else is murder with the exception of the occasional accident that results in death, and then i think the guilt of someone else's death on your hands is punishment enough

Wasn't there this kid who tried to do a Superman and jumped out of a window a long way back? Why not ban superman?

Murederers are created by enviromental factors, not genetic.

So claiming you were abused isnt a defense, becuase it shaped who you are.

Thats why I think Prisons should reform people instead of p

Because it quite cleary states in superman costumes that wearing the cape does not enable you to fly.

The day I see a man fashion a death machine out of a Playstation controller (triangle shoots knives out, square lights things on fire) and kill hundreds of people, while keeping score, will be the day I try to think again if video games have a negative influence on society.

And then I will just think "he was most certainly just nuts in the first place."

Hm, That's an interesting idea... I mean...

if it say that the kid got violent for child abuse and it say that the familiars are making a sue them they are trying to not get the fault

I'm sorry, but this damn well gets put in my signature!

People need to grow up. Also, notice the childhood abuse part, bad parenting to blame ftw.

....and the blame continues on video games - im sure Hitler used the same response at some point...

TOOLS!!!

"Hitler, you started WWII, and killed too many damn people. How do you plead..(chuckle)"
"Not Guilty, I WILL FIND THE STRIPPER AND KILL HER AND TAKE HER MONEY AND BUY ME A NEW HOUSE!!!!"

'Woah...alright Hitler *grabs gun, shoots in face*...Now remember folks, he killed himself in a bunker in Germany..."

sorry about being off-topic but, dalamari gets his quotes in alot of sigs, i've seen 3 so far (Including Me)

back on topic, WTF IS WITH THE NEGATIVE CAMPAIGN ON GAMES ALL OF A SUDDEN, it's not the games fault these people are stupid, like that kid who killed those cops, "Oh, but it was the game!", Screw that gay kid, his retard mom had the stupid sense to buy it for her UNDERAGED son anyways, she should go to jail! I'm sure everyone who loves games is with me!

And as for that little girl Jack Thompson and everyone who agrees with him, THEY CAN ALL GO STRAIT TO HELL!

:dozey: Pussies, what a bunch of pussies... always have to blame something.

Nah, lethal does of radiation or crucifix is better.

I imaginate all the thieves using the same excuse

court:"sir you are acussed of car thieve what you say in your defense"
criminal:"eh..the videogame GTA made me do it"
other
court:"sir you are acussed of kill a prostitute what you say in your defense"
criminal:"eh ah a videogame called GTA forced me to do it"
other
court:"sir you are acused of pee in public what you say in your defense"
criminal"videogames called GTA made me do it"
court:"dam what is this game everybody talks?"

lol o true, anyway RJMC kind of has a point. with video games nowadays becoming more and more realistic eventually some gullible judge is gunna fall for it and blame the video games. nobody will beleive the cannibal who says "pacman made me do it" but maybe the next GTA games?

This just in! CNN is reporting that an unnamed individual attempted to eat children during the late hours of Halloween. His only comment? "LOL waka-waka-waka TASTEH GHOSTS!". Detectives are examining this clue even as we go to press.

Earlier this month a short Italian plumber was arrested for breaking into a pet shop and acting cruelly towards tortoises. More on this story as it develops...

:p

While I'm very glad the judge saw sense, I can't help thinking that the families of the victims have no interest in justice, merely in monetary gain. They're clearly trying to take Rockstar to court simply so they can get some cold hard cash as opposed to sympathy: currently, tragic as this is, they deserve neither.
