oh man, now this is not a movie you see everyday. i watched it on youtube, kinda illegal i guess but it's from 1973 and i'm sure none of the local video renting stores would have it.

anyways...movie is very intriguing but slow at times definitely not for everyone. if you like more deep, slow, psychological thrillers you're gonna love this one.
the end is entertainingly disturbing, just the way i like it.

well technically you're right, but i like the whole religion, macabre setting and plot. the end is really the best part for me, besides the fertility worshiping.

I haven't seen the original however I have seen the remake, and it pissed me off. Especially the bad ending. Yeah, a cop goes missing on an island filled with cultist whack jobs, and the police doesn't investigate...

I might've liked it if the island was nuked from orbit.

The original was pretty good. Definitely slow paced, but thats just how movies were back then. Plus I think it helped with setting the mood, as the slow pace with awkward things happening over time makes it pretty intense when things start happening.

And yeah, the Nick Cage one was absolutely awful. How does that guy make so many of the movies he is in suck so bad? Hes been in like, two movies where he didnt make them worse.

Funny, I just watched this last night. It's super great because the evil cultists are really happy fulfilled people, whereas the main character comes off as a complete psychopath. There's a wonderful tension throughout between their pleasant smiles and his slowly falling apart. Then that tension explodes at the end.

See, it's easy to scare people by manipulating simple psychological signals; darkness, surprise, ominous music. It's rather harder to be disturbing when almost every scene takes place in the daylight and many of them contain joyous singing and dancing. mad props

precisely that...why such movies are good. There are no modern movies that can give you the same experience today, most are just triggering our simple fears that you eventually get used to. That's why i find most horror movies today boring, especially those "the ring" types, same old cheap scares again and again.

I watched the Nic Cage one first which one was hilarious. So bad it's good, just like The Happening.

Then watched the original one. It was kind of ok. There was few editing problems when the lighting suddenly changed in a continuous scene a couple of times, which bothered me a bit. I didn't think the original movie was anything special. The Nic Cage one, however, oh man...

The remake is worth watching for hilarity's sake alone. It has NIC CAGE IN A BEAR SUIT PUNCHING WOMEN. The original was sort of cool in certain parts simply because they were so weird, but alltogether it was kind of boring and anticlimactic.
