Since this is the first rather "good" computer im putting togeather, I had order my motherboard(ASUS A8N-SLI), cpu(Athlon 64 3500+ Veince), and 1gig of ram. They all went togeather smoothly with an older case of mine.

Now I can have an extra HD and floppy and cd\dvd player\burner that so I only have 3 more parts to worry about.
My Power Supply(Which I know what one I will use), Graphics Card(Waiting till ATI releases there next one so price drop), and Thermal Paste....

Now luckly I read that my cpu requires Thermal Paste. So I was wondering if:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835100008 would be right for my processor. I'm guessing so and I'm guessing it's rather good(Just due to it's newegg's highest priced one).
So i'm just wondering if I should order this along with my power supply soon(and probably a cheap ass pci card just to make sure it all works perfectly), and then just follow the intstructions for putting it on.

And I believe I only have to put this on the heatsink every time I remove the heatsink/fan?

Its really good but itll be best if you just went to compusa, bestbuy, circuit city and bought some artic silver from there seriously youre getting ripped off if you order it. once you see the actual bottle/dispenser youll be thinking what I paid 24 dollars for this? for directions on applying http://www.arcticsilver.com/instructions.htm

also why buy all those good specs then get a crappy pci card.. especially if its sli

Well, if you ordered the "retail" version of the 3500+ and not the "OEM" version, then you don't require it. Although you may use it if you wish anyways. If you do need/want to use it, that particular one you picked out will do just fine.

And yeah, you will have to clean and re-apply that stuff whenever you remove the heatsink.

EDIT: To what the above poster said: It is a tiny little tube of paste but I hear they go a looooong way. You only need to apply a small dab in the center.

Just for a quick test run to make sure it works.
Next Month when I will be up about 400 - 500 more dollars I will be buying a very nice Pci Express x16 card...

The perfect line.
Yeah I got the retail version. I will probably order Thermal Paste sometime later then to reduce the heat.

Thanks :).

Was wiating for your post Asus :).
Thanks.

I knew Asus was gonna recommend that thermal paste. He did it too me. I'm using it on the computer I'm sitting with now.
I guess it's alright. The computer has never encountered any heating problems at least. :)

Put some of this on my Nvidia 5700LE 256meg and my Intel Pentium 2.8E proccessor, and my temperature in my case dropped from 41C idle to 37C Idle. What else can i say.

Lol.

But yeah, Arctic Silver 5 is generally (generally) considered the best around.

I reapplied my (awesome looking) hsf on my 6800gt (one of those custom Gigabyte ones) and my gpu temps went from 70 idle to about 48-50 idle.

Good stuff.

Wow, thats a pretty impressive temp drop there. Just shows how much of a difference it can really make. Might buy some and just reseat my cpu hsf and my beast of a cooler on my gfx card too.

EDIT: Looks like I'm in luck. My favorite online comp store, www.overclockers.co.uk have AS5 and the cleaning and preporation kit on offer! Think I might get those!

AS5 is v. good stuff, would recommend it to anybody. Having said i didn't see any temp drop on my Galaxy 6800GT when i removed the artic silencer and reapplied with AS5, which was odd. Maybe they had already used good quality stuff when they removed the stock hsf and replaced it with the artic silencer. I should prob remove my akasa 33 hsf and reapply with AS5 sometime, but meh, i'll do it when i can be bothered.

:E

Ah overclockers, used to be my favourite store. Great prices, good range of products. However........... customer service is abysmal and some of my friends have been mistreated by them to the extent i refuse to buy from them anymore.
