So I just want this to be explained. I understand they are encrypted and what now but isn't there someone out there that can "hack" them or whatever. What exactly would you have to do...? A password? Some sort of language? How would ppl even attempt to go about opening these coded files....

It would take a hell of a long time to decrypt it. Something like a million years, even with a supercomputer.

Probably like 128bit or 256 bit encryption, but it would be with algorithms and such....

Not more anybody will say though ;) Nov. 16 is just so close that I wouldn't want them cracked no matter what!

Hypothetically speaking, we couldn't play them even if they were cracked, why? No DLL's and no EXE

So a lot of mathematical equations and what not?

If they could be decrypted don't you think it would be done by now? If someone does I'll sell my left testicle. No wait make that right Testicle :p

To decrypt the data you need a 'key', which is like a really long password. The longer the password, the more resistant the data is to direct brute-force attacks (i.e. you just guessing). That's what all that 128-bit/256-bit stuff is about. It's a bit more complicated in that there are two keys (one for unlocking, one for locking if you like), and naturally the math is not trivial.

If you look up 'public key cryptography' you should find some nice sites.

From what I've heard we haven't got all the major files that would be needed to run HL2. So it would be pointless to tell everyone you've cracked a game that doesn't work yet. When we see the final update then we may see someone proclaim to have hl2 working.

one file needs to be changed in order for things to get running. the best i can tell, there is a list of working/not working files, all saved in a custom format. this custom format could be encrypted, and the file i refer to tells Steam which ones should be encoded and extracted, but i cannot confirm nor deny this.

We don't have .dlls or an .exe. So, when the game is released we will probably DL these.

If someone tells me they've cracked the game after it's been released...I'm going to kill them for being so stupid.

Is there anyway to get the music?

I want my HL2 soundtrack.... NOW!

VALVe is sending out all the gold items in January I believe.

*edit* KagePrototype, are you talking about the CSS ones? Those won't work with HL2 as they are DLL's for MP and not SP.

Or do we have them in our GCF's? I thought we didn't.

What? No way. Why would they wait that long? Just to piss us off? I don't believe that.

Once someone had the decrypted files, they could probably splice together a working copy using leak files, and CS: Source files. But, there's almost no chance of someone decrypting the files before the 16th anyway.

On a supercomputer... i doubt that would take long, they use them to
see what the nuke will do when it hits its target, the supercomputers should be able to do over a trillion caculations a second if i am correct.
