Personally I think this might be bad for consumers, due to less battle on the graphic card front but time will tell.

"On July 24, 2006, AMD and ATI announced a plan to join forces, in a transaction that will combine AMD’s technology leadership in microprocessors with ATI’s strengths in graphics, chipsets and consumer electronics. The result is a processing powerhouse: a new competitor, better equipped to drive growth, innovation and choice for its customers in commercial and mobile computing segments and in rapidly-growing consumer electronics segments. The transaction, valued at US $5.4 billion, is expected to close in Q4 2006 subject to approval by ATI shareholders, court approval, regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions"

Noooo.
If Microsoft buys Nvidia, I'd laugh.

Ahh dammit I searched through all the, in my mind, obvious forums but couldnt find it, too bad you cant just make a search on words below 4 letters.
Actually, that thread is about AMD considering acuiring ATI, whereas this thread is about them actually going through with the deal. :D - Its a big difference! RLY!

So they have until the end of the year. I suppose that is when the license expired and they chose not to renew.

Good overview of the details about merger
"At this point, we know that AMD intends to keep ATI as a separate business unit..."
"The word is that despite the persistent rumors over the past month or so, Intel and NVIDIA are both somewhat shocked by this news"

"ATI "remains committed to Canada" and will be keeping operations there."

haha yeah it is too bad that we can't search by 3 letter words. Although it is a thread about the AMD/ATI merger from rumors to confirmation (2nd page). I really was only linking the thread so others might see responses and links so that they didn't have to get reposted.

Would be nice if they opened up Crossfire to work on any chipset.
But I guess that depends how much they care about their chipset buisness.

This could get interesting. Just maybe.

I would think it'd be a good thing... ATI and AMD teams would be able to work better to integrate powerful features that work well with both sets of hardware.

Ati is Canuck and Nvidia is Americanese.

You really have to wonder:
Nvidia wont let intel have SLI motherboards.
ATI was letting intel have Crossfire motherboards, probably not anymore.

What will this mean to Nforce motherboards and AMD support?

D:

This is almost as shocking as it was in the first few threads posted about this!
