things to think about:

if the sky is blue. what if i see it as green, and you see it as red but we are both taught to call it blue? we wouldnt know that we were seeing in different colours because we both call it the same thing. what if everyone saw colours differently??

-------------------------------------------------
physics. who do these things happen!?
we know about gravity and forces, magnetic fields and things etc... but nobody knows why or how.

how come large objects cause smaller objects to become attracted to them?

why are positively and negatively charged particles attracted to each other?

why do magnets become attracted to each other?

>>>>>wouldnt the movement caused by these scenarios require kinetic energy to occur????

ie. a small rock with no energy is near the earth. later, the same object begins to hurtle towards the earth... where does the energy come from to cause the movement???

is there a reasonable explanation for this or am i right in being confused?
---------------------------------------------

anyone have anything else to add to things to think about?
does anyone have any answers?

conciousness: what is it? how do you define it? how did it come to be?how can we tell whether an organism possesses it or not?

you know, a lot of this has been answered. too many times.
most of it, though, like the top thing, is true. ive thought about that a lot. through scientific tests (donating eyes, etc.) would've solved that.

one thing to think about is this:
if "God" didn't want us to realize how everything was formed, etc., then why can we explain how life is created? how cells divide? atomic theories?

Because we are wrong and that isn't how things were formed.

how come some people still beleive in creationism... even though the evolution of humans has been proven?(almost)

Because of the "(almost)" part, they pull out stuff like how evolving doesnt make any sense and scientific theories can support it. Like "deformities" in a species never lead to improving it, only making it less efficient.

"God" created all life. a lot of the theories are close to perfection or are already perfect. There are theories with bugs in them, but they're still one step closer to solving the riddle.
another thing:
Planets revolve around the sun. Atoms have electrons revolving around their nucleus. What if we're just a part of a bigger life form?
(doesn't care about science anymore. screw it; it's close enough)

I have thought about that too, but if the universe was created from the big bang then wouldn't the same happen to atoms? They would keep getting bigger and bigger and then compact and keep going on like that, but at a much faster rate than our universe does because atoms are so much smaller.

it could just spiral downward infinitely, i mean, we THINK that the ATOM is the SMALLEST possible thing. THINK. and we don't have 100% accurate examples of them. a lot of this stuff is mainly theory, guessing, and trying to make the best of things.

uhhh... the atom is not the smallest thing. Check this out

and that's just what we, as humans, can discover with our current technology and intellect. who knows how much more there is.

neptuneuk, some of these things cannot be explained. its like trying to answer the question "Why do we exist?" or "What's our purpose?" There is no answer that we can provide.

basicly we can never find out how we/everything was created because we will always be able to ask, and what created that?

That is really cool to see everything in perspective, schools should teach it like that but atoms and the universe are never taught together.

nick, THINK was a keyword in my statement. i also believe it was in caps, too, which makes it even more sad.
a few people at a university that a friend goes to is actually debating a lot of this stuff. it was pretty fascinating to see, actually... a lot of crap that can be questioned...
and remember, if this does carry out, that means there miniature life, so be careful with what you do! don't kill the little dudes!

IMHO the biggest question is what defined existence. Why do some things exist and others not? For example, imagine a world in your head. Is it any less real than this world? What if you imagine all of the details, the laws of physics, the people in it, the whole thing, then is it real? Or maybe you don't even have to imagien the details, just imagine that it is governed by laws of physics and that's definition enough. What's specific about our reality that makes it exist? Does it exist?

We can assume that there are an infinite number of separate unique realities. I can prove this is true because by definition these other "imaginary" realities have absolutely no relation and no impact on us. Therefore it is impossible to disprove them and whether or not they exist really has no effect on us. Therefore simply saying they exist makes them exist. So is our local reality different from these other realities? It's only relative. My universe is real because I inhabit it. That means that our reality is "imaginary" relative to other realities. So therefore nothing or everything is real and possible, and we are only limited by our consciousness. Kind of a paradox because we only exist because of our consciousness. The only way to transcend our consciousness would be to lose our identity in which case we would not exist and so the whole thing is kind of a moot point.

Thats a pretty damn cool representation of things.. :)

I like quarks. They are part of the only physics exam I have done well at in the past year! :P

Doing fine now btw. I had a really bad 8 months academically. :rolling:

That top one is the only one I really care about - how do you interpret reality? I used to have a forum about things like this.

Heh, ive always thought about that (the color thing at the top of this thread), I wasnt sure but guessed that other people have thought the same thing.

ooh! i got something to think about! how people get banned in forums! i mean, how do they manage it? it's a seriously question, you seriously need to be that slow to have it happen!

Well it doesn't really matter because a colour by definition is a certain absolute wavelength that isn't relative to our perception of it. Now when you see red what you're really saying is that light is hitting my eye with a wavelength of around 650 nanometers. Use 650 nm as a synonym for red and it doesn't matter what's in your mind because that is relative only to objective reality. So as long as we both label light with a wavelength of 650 nm as red then we are both seeing the same thing.

I was about to say the same thing

And i can tell your from the UK right?

...colour

I r teh detective.

Thats a very good explanation Dan, however there is still the idea that the perception can differ inside your 'head' due to any number of reasons.

Reasons such as.... ? As long as your eyes are properly functioning and you're seeing a certain colour, that colour is DEFINED by objective reality. You have no other reference for that colour.

And I'm actually from Canada. We too can speak English.

Well...half English :P

I'm rather tired at the moment, so perhaps I was misunderstanding what you originally said. Now that you say what you have I change my mind, but I was simply meaning that our perception of things can change for something such as damage to the brain.
