Just watched Enemy Of The State with a friend to kill a few hours, and the end brought up a bit of a debate between us. But its hard to argue with women so ill ask you guys.

'How do you draw the line between protection of national security, obviously the governments need to secure intelligence data, and the protection of civil liberties; particularly the sanctaty of my home, you have no right to come into my home'.

Thats the end line. So what do you guys think. Should the government be keeping tabs on us for a sake of national security, monitoring our calls and emails etc etc, and who's monitoring the monitors?

Now this is all probably some huge over reaction as ive just watched a film about it, but it has a point wether you chose to believe it or not I guess.

Im kinda torn. Yes governments need to monitor us to keep the peace, but at the same time, they dont have the right to watch our lives surely?

Street/workplace survelliance? Fine whatever. Don't do anything wrong and ye have nothing to fear.

Domestic survelliance? I'd rather smash the camera and go to prison thank you very much.

What, you mean like ceiling cat?

I'm not a fan of government surveillence, no. Invasion of privacy must be very tightly regulated by the courts imo.

They watch you while you're doing naughty stuff.

The fact of the matter is that there are too many Americans for mass surveillance to be an effective tool for identifying individuals. Here is an article about the mathematics of why it doesn't work: http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig7/rudmin1.html. I am not sure if I agree with the conclusion though.

The power to monitor people should be available strictly to the intelligence services, and the police for serious crime investigations, but it must be strictly regulated with a great degree of oversight.
Not like the situation now where thousands of different agencies are allowed access to all kinds of personal information, and we have 20% of the entire world's CCTV cameras watching us. The DVLA for one openly sell driver details to anyone and everyone.

"We think you are using too much water, so we put a camera in your bath."
