This crashing is killing me...HELP

Hi guys...I've been trying to play HL2 on and off but when I actually sit and play I get crashes, usually after about 20 minutes or so. I get a looping sound and hard crash (meaning I have to manually restart). The game is incredible, but I'm losing the atmosphere of the game itself when I have to constantly reboot.
My system is fully optimized, I get this with no other games. I also turned off fast writes to no avail.
HELP.

AMD64 3000+
Windows XP PRO
ATI 9700 PRO

i get the same thing happening to me with call of duty, i had to revert to the 4.7 drovers to get any headway
