ok so I log into steam to check out the new update only to find out that apparently I don't have tf2 installed...news to me...anyways anybody else had this problem and know a fix I really don't feel like downloading the whole thing again when the content is clearly right there on my hard disk...

steam support is useless and comes up with no suggestions...and I've already did the clientregistry.blob trick and no luck...

heeeeeelp!:x

Well i'd assume the game info is on your steam account as well, so if you just re-download it you'd probably still have everything.

which part of "I don't want to re-download the whole thing" didn't you get?

Oh i'm sorry, apparently theres a way to play a downloaded computer game without downloading it. If you care that much, you'll download it, or just buy a CD version.

Prince, try restarting Steam.
I don't think Fishy understands.

already restarted multiple times.

anyways anyone know if I decide to re-download if it will actually re-download all the content already present or will it skip those files saving me time?

this is annoying...lamest update for tf2 so far...

I'm not even really looking that much forward to the new stuff, seeing as a good deal of it is broken/buggy/unfinished....

this is ****ing bullshit...

so since I couldn't find anything on fixing this shit using steam support and the official forum search feature is broken....I decided to try and tell steam to install the game, hoping it would recognize that the files are already present....apparently it's too dumb a system for that so I have to start all over from scratch downloading this game.....this is going to take ****ing ages and it's completely pointless thanks a lot Valve you always know how to break things.

This makes me wish this forum had rep. Your ass would be so far in the red for this comment. You're not helping jack shit mate.

@PoSpace - It doesn't recog the file is in your registry? Is it replacing the old files with the files you're downloading in the same directory location?

I'm honestly not entirely sure wtf it's doing...it seems judging by % and estimated download time that it has begun downloading from scratch.

but it also seems that some...of the older files are still present in the game directory...maybe it's re-downloading the gfc's and later it will unpack and over-write....how the **** am I supposed to know?

all I know is that this is retarded either way....it shouldn't be listing my tf2 as "not installed" in the first place.

did some date checking and it seems it is indeed redownloading the gfc files...which annoys me since I didn't think about that and only did a backup of the tf2 folder and not the gfc files...so it would seem I have no option now other than just re-download the whole thing....I guess?

anyone remember if on first install/download of tf2 it says "updating" for the status?

because that's what it says on my end ...but it's a bit confusing seeing as technically on a fresh install it's not really updating but rather downloading/installing...

lol...ok as I was writing this...the updating % just jumped to 100% so...maybe it did realise the stuff was already there but had begun downloading the new stuff first without taking into account the old files?

I dunno...but I hope so...I will have to see once I get back from family b-day party I guess...

hmmm so it's been at 100% for a while now but it's still downloading....but I've had that happen before except it usually doesn't continue for THAT long after getting to 100%...also trying to launch the game it still reports 7+ hours left and the progress bar shows nothing...wtf?

stupid update.

The game is actually contained in the GCF files, the TF2 folder just holds configs and some of the game core files. It does seem like your GCF files were missing becuase Steam will not redownload the full set if they are there, even if they are damaged it will fix them instead.

That's a drag man. One of the recent updates, if I remember correctly, was pretty hefty. Maybe it's repairing things and downloading these patches, and it's display of this was giving you 'false' symptoms?
