is he speaking english?

Republican Alabama gubernatorial candidate Tim James (and son of previous Gov. Fob James) vows in a new campaign ad that if he's elected, he'll give the state driver's license exam only in English, as a cost-saving measure.

"This is Alabama; we speak English," he says in the ad. "If you want to live here, learn it."

It's not clear how James thinks the change would save the state money. Marc Ambinder of the Atlantic says Alabama could actually lose billions of dollars in federal funding if it enacts the measure

He looks like an idiot when he looks down at the words that show up later on the screen.

Yup, so legal immigrants that come here but haven't yet learned English can go **** themselves.

pretty much, do you have a problem with that?

Umm...yes. Because I came here legally from Poland and english isn't something you learn overnight. Not being able to drive is a problem when you need to get to work, buy groceries, etc, etc, etc.

So the question is, you don't have a problem with this?

Honestly I wouldn't move to another country unless I could speak the native language there. You're just asking for all kinds of complications and misunderstandings.

If you're going to live in japan, shouldn't you be making a serious effort to learn japanese asap?

so if you've just recently immigrated to japan and want to get a license so that you can drive a taxi (employment of choice for immigrants) you cant until you learn to read and write japanese ..you could be completely fluent in japanese but write at a grade one level ..whoops it looks like you're not getting a license which will force you to live on the street cuz you dont have a car to live in

why would you purposefully make it more difficult for immigrants to learn to speak english?

Well obviously it takes time to learn but some Hispanics won't even try.
i.e listen to Mexican radio stations, watch Mexican TV channels etc.
I don't want to assume but I bet you speak mostly English now right?
unless it with your mom or dad....but in public mostly English right?
If you don't even really attempt to learn it you never will and that should be punished not subsidized.

And before someone calls me a bigot,I have many Latino friends at work who agree with me.This one girl at work has a Mexican BF (she's Mexican too.) and whenever she goes to his house his family all start speaking Spanish on purpose knowing that she doesn't speak and understand very well.

All this creates a duality for the Nation which is unhealthy.

ya well try to stick to the facts of the case. this isnt about learning to speak english it's about being able to read and write english which isnt the same thing.

even if you dont agree with this you have to ask yourself why is this person even bringing this up if the state stands to lose millions in funding due to this? how many people would this law actually prevent from getting license in comparison tot he loss of billions in funding every year?

Governor Riley (who has been a consistent supporter of English as the official state language) has maintained that based on the US Supreme Court ruling in Sandoval, returning to an English-only driver’s license examination would put our federal transportation dollars in jeopardy. That didn’t satisfy some who had fought hard for the English-only constitutional amendment and they sued in 2005 saying the state was violating this amendment by offering the written exam in multiple languages. The Alabama Supreme Court (also in a 5-4 decision) ruled against the English-only advocates and said the state was not in violation of the amendment.

So, apparently, Tim James disagrees with our current governor, and is willing to put billions of dollars at risk to “save” some undetermined amount because he’s a smart businessman? Does that make sense to you?

Yes, I just speak english except to my parents. What makes you think that brown people are different?

Don't put words in my mouth.
This has to do with culture and how close Mexico is to the U.S, if Poland was right next to the U.S it would be the same problem

Really? Chicago has more Polaks than Warsaw does. They have Polish radio, they have polish signs everywhere. Yet those polaks learn to speak english, you don't claim otherwise. So why do you assume that is not the case for mexicans?

You tell me why many of them can't speak it.
I work retail and I see it everyday.

Socal btw

He's a racist bigot

Ah yes me wanting people to speak English makes me a Racist...kk

Japan is not exactly a cultural melting pot. And Japan has Japanese as the official language. WE HAVE NO OFFICIAL LANGUAGE. End of story.

So according to you Raz we shouldn't even have the debate?

You see what you want to see, I just call it like I see it

edit: I'd love to know your definition of racism btw.

Because I know many families that have been here for decades where the Parents still can't write or speak properly.
I don't live in a all white Neighborhood or something and the people that I work are mostly Latino and I'm good friends with many, people that are born here don't tend to have the problem I'm talking mostly about older people. Also in Europe kids learn English from4th grade why can't South American Countries do the same? You'd think the close Proximity to the U.S would make that a no-brainer.
Also when a customer hands me a Wells Fargo or Amex Card to pay but they cannot speak or a full sentence of English...something wrong with that Picture

Really? You know families that can't write or speak properly? Where do you know these families from? And what do you mean can't speak properly? Do they have an accent you don't like?

My dad's been here since 1994, and he has a strong accent but speaks fine. That's the case for anyone that tried to learn another language after a certain age, they don't learn it as well as younger people.

and? arent they just hurting themselves? I mean even if the tests are in their native tongue the visual representation part of the test (identify the road signs etc) would still have to be in english or what's the point? the signs irl arent going to be in english. so what's the problem?

I'm sorry I should be more clear yes there should be an option for people to take Your Written Test in your native tongue BUT Immigrants need to put alot more into learning English classes should even be funded by Local Government imo but yeah you catch my drift?

It just so happens that it's mostly Latino Immigrants that have the problem-pointing that out doesn't make anyone racist.

Yes, it does. It also makes you an idiot.

You have no evidence of this, you are saying it based off your racist stereotypes.

...so in other words you dont agree with this guy and believe written road tests should be offered up in multiple languages

see this why people are calling you bigoted. you're doing exactly what the governor candidate is doing; making this an issue as to whether immigrants should speak english or not when the real issue is about language options in written license tests. you're using this issue as a soapbox to preach your pov on immigrants in general

they should learn the language for their own benefit, not ours.

they should learn the language for their own benefit, not ours.

This is true. This is why I want to eventually learn Spanish. Not for their benefit, but for my benefit.

Its irrelevant if you think they should or not, be it for their own benefit or not.

What matters is if you think it should be illegal and that laws should be passed for no reason other than to hinder those who refuse.

And frankly, if you think it should be, then you're a terrible person.

I think as long as it remains that the USA has no official language, requirement to learn English shouldn't exist.

We're a free country... you should be free to choose your own language to speak.

It would be bullshit if you couldn't!

"Group Aims to Reclaim America for Christ "

so by your logic that means we should forcibly convert them to atheism on the off chance that they might take over america

All of these groups are retarded.
Why do you bring religion in to this lol?
One thing has nothing to do with the other and I'm pretty sure you know I'm an Atheist.
I'm not trying to be selective lol even though that what you try to make me look like

"why do you bring religion into this"

sigh ..why do I bother if you dont understand the point? it went right over your head

I took a shower....now I understand sorry about that.
So I don't think all fringe groups are equally as dangerous equally retarded yes.
In other words tinfoil hat people and Christian Wackos that one to create a Theocracy hold some political power but not public support.
The Atzlan movement on the other hand has a huge support here in the U.S and Mexico.
It's also one of the reason some think it's no crime to cross the borders illegally because they don't recolonize the U.S as a sovereign state.

look up Mexica Movement etc on youtube
There is one channelb which is the 4th most subscribed to in mexico

sounds no different than your garden variety white supremacist group or militia

Spectacular thread here.

"I've seen a lot Mexicans I assume haven't bothered or aren't bothering to learn English, that must mean all or a vast majority of them are like this."

"Based on my racist generalization we're obligated to prevent all Spanish speaking citizens from being able to function in the world until they completely learn English."

"Guys, a lot of Mexicans a watched video on youtube."

I honestly don't know why you guys even bother with him.

Per request, I've gone through this thread again to find his actual arguments and directly debate them, but the only argument I see is:

"Mexicans don't bother to work as hard to learn English as much as other groups."

Which happens to be a generalization based off of a very small sample, racist, and irrelevant.
