This is why I don't visit the "US" section of online news...

The world is boring, since there's no real war going on.

You do realize that this happens in almost every country?
It's not a reason to single out the U.S
This is terrible of course but I can't help but point how cliche it is to pin this on the U.S somehow.

I just find it disheartening that they don't show similar stuff in the world section (or preferrably not at all for US), though it's obvious that it's because they're only picking out the big stuff, just wish they could do that for here too. But yeah, it's probably because there is nothing.

People are more interested in murder, rape, etc than anything else, if only to turn to their friends and say "my gosh, the world is full of sickos"...it's all about ratings. The major news networks are a business, and whatever gets the most viewers is good for business.

I agree with unozero that this really isn't a US problem, we just happen to have the resources and motivation to report the most ****ed up shit. Saddening...

The world is really messed up, I try not to watch the news because of this.

you should read the news of my country

Saw this story a few days ago, didn't want to post.

Yeah, OLD.

Why so quick to announce the fact that it didn't JUST happen? If you heard about it a few days ago then fine, you're ahead of some of us. Don't discourage people from posting news just because it's not happening in real time. Like another thread suggests, some of us get a percentage of our news from this site.

Just want to say, just because 63 quoted me doesn't mean I agree with what he's saying. He's just trolling anyway. All I wanted to say was that I saw the story but decided not to post it.

Man, he had one moderately successful trolling in the gaming section, and he just lets loose with any lameass attempt he can think of to relive it.

Honestly, I'd rather not...and for good reason.

just a snip

Ciudad Juarez - the scene of regular and brutal score-settling between rival drug gangs - has 130 murders per 100,000 inhabitants, the Citizen's Council for Public Security said.

Caracas has 96 murders per 100,000 inhabitants and New Orleans registers 95, the Mexican non-governmental organisation said, basing its figures on media and FBI reports.

Caracas was listed as the murder capital of the world in the September 2008 Foreign Policy magazine, quoting official figures of 130 murders per 100,000 inhabitants.

The Mexican NGO put another Mexican border city, Tijuana, in fourth place with 73.

Cape Town, South Africa, was fifth with 62, and Baghdad, Iraq, is in 10th position with 40 murders per 100,000 inhabitants.

yeah more that bagdad bitches and number 2!

and what the president has to say about this?

http://colombiareports.com/colombia...a-to-blame-for-crime-in-venezuela-chavez.html

The increase in murders and kidnappings in Venezuela is to blame on Colombia and paramilitary fighters coming from that country, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said on Sunday.

"A large part of the kidnappings and murders that are taking place in different parts of the country is coming from Colombia, from paramilitarism," Chavez said on his weekly "Alo presidente" radio and television broadcast.

According to the Venezuelan head of state, "yesterday we captured here, in the outskirts of Caracas, a group of persons, foreigners, with buried guns: paramilitaries." Chavez did not say if the detainees were of Colombian nationality and how many there were.

Chavez warned that Venezuelans that "they are planting paramilitaries in the neighborhoods" of Venezuelan cities.

The Venezuelan President has frequently accused opposition leaders of collaborating with Colombian right-wing paramilitary groups to destabilize his government. Chavez himself is accused of supporting Colombian left-wing guerrillas.

also there is a report of a local news site that says the goverment stoped giving official numbers since 2005 and the only way to know is to ask to the morgues directly and such, not found it in english

Trolling a rape thread is a bit out of taste dontcha think?

Missing middle class white women tend to be a viewer feast for news outlets on slow news streaks.
Thousands of people will go missing every year, and the media will choose a single person to focus on.
This is nothing new: back in 2002 we got Elizabeth Smart and Laci Peterson. Cut to a couple of years later, and we get Jennifer Wilbanks and Natalee Holloway.
I have nothing but respect for these people and their families, but the news never seems to look at the big picture, treating these victims (and runaways) as nothing more than tools to secure ratings.
