Some of you may remember me saying something about my car being DEAD! Well, I finally got it towed to a shop and they said it's the..*I probably heard him completely wrong here* "Booster Coils". My friends say it's the Ignition Coil, which costs $1000 to replace. That is too expensive for me, sadly. I might just end up having to part that beast out, which I really don't want to do. Anyway, any car savy people think that sounds right? The car is an '88 Mazda RX-7.

(note not at all car savvy and i assume you have already posted this on your RX-7 forum you have previously asked questions about your car at so..

That sounds a fair bit for an Ignitin Coil....what i would do i look at however much a comparable RX-7 is second hand and weigh up the pros and cons of fixing/buying another car

I have no intentions on paying too much for it. If it costs too much, I'll either try to part it out or sell it to the highest bidder. If it's still running, I could probably get more out of it :D *I'm an asshole, but I need money.*

I REALLY need a new car, sadly.

$1000 for an ignition coil? Hmmmm they really want you to bend over eh? That seems a bit much, JUST A WAY BIT...Unless its impossible to find 13b parts which in all honesty it should be quite easily to find stuff for them...Stab the shop owner in the face. ;)

Part-Ex/Sell it ideally via e-bay, get it towed to a lay-bay and have the person pay-pal the money to a phoney account and wire the money around and close your e-bay account and :D

I figured I could get a pretty penny for parting it out if it indeed comes to that. I am tempted to buy another RX-7, because I love being inside them. They are so fun to drive, and I love them, except for the massive amounts of headaches I've encountered. I don't feel like doing it all over again. I just don't have enough money/credit to get a newer car that I won't have to spend 2x the amount of money on the car after I buy it. I don't know, I might have to buy another 7, but if I do, I want to get a TII..which costs ~4k.

I don't know to much about the RX-7's but it does sound way to high. I am a Cavalier man. Right now I have a Cavalier Z24 which is being worked over. Turbo, Exaust, Forged Pistons, etc. I will be pusing out around 250HP when the engine is in. Some sleeper eh?

My dad was like, "yeah, that sounds about right". My dad laughed really hard at the price though and said you could buy a new engine for that price. I have no clue either but you gotta be reasonable. He said you could find one for $80. I found one on ebay (I think) for $10: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mazda-RX7-RX-7-Celica-4Runner-4-Runner-Ignition-Coil_W0QQitemZ200063799625QQihZ010QQcategoryZ46101QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Yeah, if it was for some reason $1000, I was going to just rebuild that engine and sell the car for over $2k. but yeah, I was looking at Ebay and I saw some, but last time I got something from ebay, someone hijacked my account/credit card..so yeah, I kind of have trust issues with it.

With all the wonders of the internet, I would have thought that you would have figured out by now that an ignition coil costs around $50, AND is something that even grandma would be able to replace by herself. SO all you need to do is hope that you heard right, and it IS just the ignition coil, and the "mechanic" wasn't just bullsh*tting you to get some extra $$ out of you.

Of course it would only cost you $50 to find out, and you could even take the coil back if it doesn't work. Just make something up.

Everywhere I looked was, "USED AND REFURBISHED" parts. I never saw a new ignition coil :( I have no idea how much those cost.

I was just thinking the exact same thing about women

sounds to me like your headlights are the problem :)

Haha, my roomates RX-7 is having teh same problem, I was like, "It's your horn fluid...or your windshield whiper motor." that was a fun laugh. I don't know, I'll try to get my car back then replace the ignition coils myself, since they are easier to get to than I thought.

Well, BRAND NEW these things are 1500 bucks. Why would I spend that much? I wouldn't. I've got 2 other RX-7s, one of which is a parts car. So I stoled a Leading Ignition Coil from it, and now my car runs just as good as it used to! *Not as good.* So we tried to get the other Rex running, since it's having the same problem...we got it started...once....here is the result of all the gas we tried to start it with for the past week :P

Why would you buy such a money pit?! You could have bought a nice 300ZX TT.

Go to a scrap yard and pull a booster coil from a wrecked RX7. It's the old model so there should be a fair few about, right?

No you don't understand. Mine works fine, we don't even know why his isn't working. We are just assuming it's the same problem of mine, because it's got the same symptoms..but with these symptoms, it could be a billion things.

Ah, OK. Can't you use parts from your RX7 to hotswap with his, to identify which part is causing the problem? I've got no experience with rotary engines so don't have a clue beyond that.

the ignition coil on my GTi is like a $40 part...and to replace it is like less than 5 bolts...

And the anti-freeze I use on my Passat can only be bought through the vendor for a nice $25 a pop.

All cars have their positives and negatives. :)

If you look at the car on the right, you can kind of see the lacking of parts. It's been a parts car for years. We've already taken the ignition coils from it and swapped it, tried swapping spark plugs...we have to tighten up the plugs some more and adjust where they are plugged in now to try again...hopefully we get this bitch running.

I can't imagine an ignition coil being 1,500. Let alone one tenth of that...

not true, you're passat probably uses orange coolant (G12 I think) which can be mixed with other orange coolant, my GTi uses green coolant (G11). I can buy green coolant for $8 a gallon, you just can't mix colors otherwise you get...basically toothpaste and a ruined coolant system. My friend's dad owns a vw shop and he buys green and orange coolant from a shop down the street and I do the same, never had any problems in my GTi or S6.

But you're right if you buy the VW/Audi coolant it is that expensive. That's how it goes with everything though, the tool to remove my crank pulley is $230 from audi, but I can buy it online for $150.

I have to spend $350 in order for my brakes to work.

do eet or no?

An ignition coil for $1000? Don't make me laugh. What is it, gold plated with diamond fasteners?

If you buy another car, it will cost you more money in the long run. Stick with what you have, keep saving your money (ie don't spend it on useless 'upgrades' that won't be reflected in the final value of the car) until you have enough for something you really want.

And never forget, cars are an expensive business. You wouldn't believe what I've spent over the years, I don't.

The thing is, if I buy a new one, it will cost the same if not more to get the one I have now into good enough shape to last another year.

I have to get the engine rebuild
the transmission rebult
new clutch kit
the wiring is all screwed up, the car will probably catch fire sooner or later
needs new tires
The struts are dead...they chopped the springs years ago, and it's just going downhill with it....
Hatch isn't opening so well...
that's just the tip of the ice burg :(
