ARG! I've been working on it for hours and something about it makes it look like it was drawn by a 5 year old.

I HATE PAINTING DIGITAL OR TRADITIONAL

I agree about the face - that's fine. Maybe it's the shoulders, where it looks like the spray can from mspaint.

O ya its barely half done.

Thanks for the encouragements. This is my second photoshop portrait and it's a real learning experience.

And by learning experience i imply "pain in the ass".

EDIT: omg the chin -_-
btw, who can recognize this lovely lady.

It's the woman from Kill Bill / Pulp Fiction, is it not? Urma Thurman?

Looks brilliant I think. The right eye looks a little too squashed, that's about it.

make her other features more well defined and it could look pretty good. Like ennui said you need a little more line definition.

more definition and sharpness, and no ones face is that smooth and blank

the skin tone doesn't match with that of the hair. but good painting though.

try to add more details to face... like soft wrinkles and stuff

Sui: thanks :D, the right eye is actually also squooshed on the ref pic >.>, looks really sleazy i might change it.
Ennui: I actually completely agree. I'm gonna work on that and hopefully the finished product won't be that soft. Thanks for the crit.
theotherguy: Ya, thanks for the crits
myth: Thanks for the crits and comments, a more realistic "freckely" skin tone to come.

Thanks crushy, I've actually been paintin in photoshop for some time now, im just starting to move on to portraits. Although it does look like i need to improve my technique.

If you take a look at the other thread I posted someone made a tutorial specifically for me.

Looks really good the nose is crooked nice values though watch the right side of her face its probably getting too dark and always make sure you do the whole drawing before you start going with wonky details.

hehe i saw, lucky you :P

The person mentions that they use painter and not photoshop, definately look into that, it's an awesome programme, you should like it :) I know I do :D

Here's a trial version http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=Corel3/Downloads/Trials

it's corel painter ix.5

Ooo thanks :D, I'm looking forward to trying it out, the results are very painterly.

Thanks for comment nofx. Going into details too early is definetly my biggest weakness. I'm a little obsessive compulsive -_-. Just one more challenge for me tho :D.

listen to nofx

simplify the values.. lighten on the left, and never use pure black or pure white for highlights
i would also put a background color on that, having pure white in the back like that ****s up your sense of lighting and color

you seem to work too much on the shifting of normal color and highlights.. just do a simple highlight and let it be reasonably sharp..

I think her left eye needs to come in a bit more, plus the left side of her nose needs a bit more definition, it just kind of dissapears into her face. Also, where her hair comes across her face on the left side, it also blends too much into her face. Well, the lower "strand" of her hair, where you stopped the shadow.

CrazyHarij: Many thanks for all the tips :)

Krynn: yeah, I see what you mean, I need to define all my planes a little more actually.

I really like the face. That's all I can say since I don't have skills to critique.

how did you do this in painter, my painter never wants to work with me. I think its because I use the oil paints what brush do you use? Iknow that sounds like a 100% noob question.

LOL what is this photoshop?
You should def try out painter its really cool beans

going to "Try" painter i wonder if there is a program where you can paint together that be sick ass with collabs and stuff oh ya i will add you to my c a art buddy lists so i wont lose you if i leave here
