**** this Pay per play. Who's with me here? Even though its just still a rumor, Who else is against this crapola idea that could hurt the mod and multiplayer community?

I think Valve already gets enough money and with HL2 purchases? I mean wow, its not like they will need anymore $ anyway for their already infinite developement budget.

Anyway, whats all your opinions?

The idea of pay-for-play is soul-crushing and not as necessary as the cost of it (if you see what I mean: cost of subscription compared to cost of server upkeep).
Is it 100% confirmed HL2 will be like this?
Valve seem too nice to do something like this.

Erm...Everyone I've seen talking about it says that's just a rumour. Wasn't there a topic a few pages back about this?

And anyway, HL2 wouldn't be pay-2-play, they don't need any money to maintain servers (as in MMORPGs).

I guess Steam may require a subscription, but I don't use it, and am therefore completely ignorant on that subject.

If I'm not totally wrong, they want everyone playing Valve games using Steam, and nothing else... It probably wont be an option to install, you simply need it. I dont think they will charge for it... I hope not. It will divide the community to much.

Errr... you got it all wrong. The pay for play idea was introduced by Valve for the Steam platform, they have licensed Steam to other companies for this purpose, it could be used as a online Blockbuster if you will. They have talked about this when they first released Steam as a open beta in january:

you can rent games for a day for lets say 5 bucks, rent for 3 days for 12 dollars or a week or a month. Thats what they meant when they said pay for play, as for HL2 maybe they'll let people rent it, for those who want to test it before buying. That's all. If you want to buy the game, there's no issue here, you will be able to play whenever you want. Think of the pay for play idea as an online store.

OK here goes. it's the unofficial "stop making pointless threads and use some common sense" post.

HL2 will not be pay to play. There are 3 or 4 top class physics engines coming out, none of which can be compared until they are released. The release date may or may not slip but it shouldn't be too far from sept 30th. That bloke at planethalflife is a prat but can say what he likes. Using the term gay, or ghey or however you want to spell it makes you look like a fool. Steam will be free, the games you buy through it will not be. The premium package text in steam is for games purchases not for pay to play. TF2 is stand alone. CZ looks crap. Yes your pc probably will run hl2 fine, especially since all the people mailing gabe seem to have more processing power than NASA. The next media release will after the end of the steam beta.

Did I miss anything?

In short use some common sense, read what others have said and stop worrying about things which in the grand scheme of things are largely of little importance.

Ok look just like mojo said the valve premier pack is for ppl that are going to buy hl2 or whatevr other game over steam. And lets just say that we do have to pay for hl2 to play online ok? Dont u think its gonna be amazing? Gabe has always said that their #1 goal is givin us more bang for our buck so if it is pay to play multiplayer it would be so freakin amazing. So dont worry they arent gonna make u pay to play online.

/me breaks down and cries

If the average intelligence of the human race cannot do the math to work out that Half-Life2 will NOT be pay to play then I really do have concern for the future of mankind.

As this has been discussed, in length, on another thread and a conclusion found ( by applying common sense ) I honestly see no reason to keep this thread open to create extra paranoia.

Thread closed.
