Help me, I own a Legit copy of HL2 and HL2DM, but I still can't connect to any servers ever since I DLed the Excite mod and got that error the first time.

It's a global issue with Steam. Many, many people are experiencing it at the moment.

I've already presented the issue to Valve a few hours ago, but I have yet to get a confirmation that anyone is looking into it (I beleive someone is, though).

Re-logging into Steam will help, but the problem may persist, even still.

It does. I just tried restarting my computer, to see if it helps.
EDIT: Now I can't even start steam. I started it before then it crashed, and now I can't start it up cause it says that it's already running. Gah!
Edit2: Gah I hate VALVe right now!

Same problem. Re-login did not fix.

Guess we'll just have to wait this out.

We are forever beta testers... I don't recall signing up.

well im glad it isnt just me, i just installed this skin mod and i had thought maybe that was the problem, when it didnt work after i removed it i was like..great... i screwed the game over. Hopefully they will fix this soon. You know its kinda strange though, i still see like a BUTT LOAD of server completely full when i can't connect to any of them... so i guess not everyone is having this problem. I wonder what is causing it.

OMG LOL it has something to do with www.aperturescience.com

OH NOES :P jk...

yeah that is crazy though that people on like all of the hl2 forums have a thread thats entitled "OMG WTF THIS STEAM ACCOUNT DOESN'T OWN THIS GAME!!"

All of this crap, just to play a single player game. Go Steam. Way to piss off your paying customers. You want to play a quick few levels of HL2? Forget it. Steam won't let you, cause it's having a sad day. But you payed lots of money for it you say? Too bad. You just want to kill 30 mins on single player? No. None of your other single player games have stupid crap that stops you playing it when it decides to have a(nother) hissy-fit? Great - go play one of them, because you won't get this one going today.

Great job, Steam.

If Valve hired you, you'll probably screw it up even more.

I know for a fact that I'd screw it up. And that's why I'm not complaining.

Wow, so much hostility on these forums lately. I remember before I had account (I guess I trolled for a few weeks) there was alot more love going on, but that was before MultiQuotes and Warnings. Anyways, has anyone tried Steam MP yet?

Just wait it out. Unless HL2 is your life you've got other things to do, right?

I know for a fact that I payed for the game. That's why I AM complaining. Every non Steam game I own, I can install and play within 5 minutes. Whenever I want. Steam stops me doing that. Steam even makes me wait (hours sometimes), if I have HL2 etc installed but haven't played for a few months, so it can do it's own updates, then the games, before it will let me play. No other copy protection / distribution system is that invasive and imposing. I own the game, I have it on disk, I EXPECT to be able to play it immediately EVERY time, and to install and play within 5 mins EVERY time, WITHOUT being forced to update, decrypt, etc the game and a third party program first. I'll do that when I'M ready, thanks Steam.

Just disable automatic updates, and play offline.

Try doing that when you install. See how far you get. Or if you haven't played for ages. Start up Steam, and whammo - games start updating before you can stop them, and once they start, we all know it's too late - you have to wait untill they are done. It's a lose - lose situation. I don't know why they can't cache the updates, and only install them once they are fully downloaded. Or NOT have "automatically update" set as the default immediately upon install, so that you can at least play the game IMMEDIATELY after install. Or both. And offline mode only works for so long, before Steam wants to "check" for updates to itself. If you haven't played for ages, good luck with that.

Shasta heres a solution, go to control panel, add or remove programs, and uninstall Steam. Seriously bitching about the problem won't get it fixed ANY faster.

Shasta, stop being such a dick. They made a mistake, no-one's perfect.
Yes. An easily fixed mistake that's still going on two years later...

Disturbed - why would I un-install something that I am forced to have installed just to play a game that I payed for? The games are fine, and a lot of fun. The hoops I am made to jump through to get to play it are not. I'd love to un-install Steam, but I am forced to have that flawed sotware installed if I want to play the HL2 etc. You know that. What a stupid suggestion you made. They just need to make it so people can play the games whenever they want. Not hours later. I guess YOU like other people deciding when you can use software that you payed for, but I don't.

It must be you then, because I log into Steam once or twice every three months. The most I've played recently was Episode 1 - I've never had to wait longer than 5 minutes for the program to do all of its updates and checks.

I'm still having this problem.....has valve addressed it yet?

They never say anything about issues, because of people like shasta, they get attacked by thousands of kiddies. They know of this issue don't worry.

And remember they just got into work right now, its a little bit after 9:30 am their time...

if you don't like steam, then dont use it and don't play valve games. You whine more than a little girl. Go away.

Another useless "suggestion". And it's even just Disturbed's "suggestion", regurgitated.

As I said, it's too late for that. I've already payed for the games, and I want to get my money's worth. And I want the basic rights that every other game I know of gives me. Like being able to install, and play, whenever I want, without being mucked around. You little fan-boys have no spine if you like being pushed around by Steam like this, and even DEFEND the way they push you around. Unbelievable.

No, its not a useless suggestion. If you don't like it don't use it. If you decide to use it then stop ****ing wingeing about it. Don't care which you pick, but stop moaning cos your getting on my tits. Your choise bub.

Fanboyism level: VERY HIGH.

Seriously people, stop being so emotive about it. Anyone who used WON back in the days (as I did) could tell you Steam is worthless. VALVe's games are great, their support and the software used to play them are not.

I don't see how defending a system/product that works for me is "fanboyism".

I wasn't targeting anyone in particular, but most of the answers in this thread almost sounded like saying negative about VALVe or their products is a crime.

Just take an un-biased look at it and you'll see.
The guy needs help with his steam/source games and 90% of the answer he gets are " if you don't like it don't play " or " You are whining like a little girl " (how macho, sic...).

Just my 2 cents, people should less emotive about it, especially in the support forum. WON vs Steam wars should go elsewhere.

WON was shit, if you think its better than Steam you must've loved the amount of cheaters roaming around, Steam has cut that in half easily. The whole WON system was outdated from the start I'm glad its completely gone.

I guess i missed 99% of the cheaters, as I did not play Counter-strike.
I'm just angry at steam for making me "update" my games and then make them stop working. Add to that how hard it is to get help from the Valve/steam staff and you get a bad mix.
Anyways, that's not the point of topic, right?

WON used to go down from time to time. And you can tell it not to update your games automatically. You'd be in the same place that you were back in the day though. An out of date multiplayer game that can't join servers on the Net.

I have had no issues with the steam servers yet. Played quite a few games over the last day or two. If I did have problems I probably would complain but if I truely did not like it I wouldn't stick around. D:
