This is the first time I ever complain about something that has to do with Valve or Steam.

Let me explain what happened :

I wanted to format my PC and reinstall everything, so I used Steam's backup system (with DVD).

So I ran this tool, and it compressed my HL2, HL2DM and CSS files into a single 3 gigs file, which I burned on a DVD (4.7 gigs).

Then I reinstalled WinXP, Steam, and then executed that compressed file ... and guess what? When I was at about 80% of the unzipping process it asks me for file number 2, oh YEAH, FILE NUMBER 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is that some stupid Valve joke???

Alright, I just have to download everything all over again. ;(

Thank you Valve, you owe me a DVD-R now.

...and what does this have to do with Valve?

Is a dvd-r worth alot? Seems like it cause it holds hell of lots

Don't blame Valve, blame yourself.

You're kidding me right?

This crappy program compressed everything into ONE FILE.

now I run that ONE FILE, and some of the data is missing.

My fault, sure ...

Its only a DVD-R, do you want Valve to send you a cheque for $2.50 so you can buy another DVD-R? Just download it again, it only takes about 1 night to download.

Oh fine, I'm sorry. Just... seperate them next time, okay?

Separate what? Did you ever use the backup tool?

It said that 1 DVD would be enough. And now it turns out it wasn't ... great!

I want them to send me a clean DVD-R

A DVD-R isn't even that much, unless you're buying top quality, but still thats over priced.

This is your fault, you should've tested it before you formatted, etc. There has been NUMEROUS of threads stating the backup utility has bugs in it. But just go ahead and blame VALVe for you jumping the gun.

You see? We should sue them!

Wow, another person with the "We should sue VALVe because of our ignorance" type of deal.

you did jump the gun by formatting before you tried using the backup you had made..

I have done that a couple of times(not with steam) and blame myself, not microsoft or whatever company made the backup software I used..

ITS STEAMZ0RZ ITS CRAP ITS VALVZ0RZ FAULT OMFGLAWLERSKATES...../sarcasm

Seriously, get over yourself. You came here expecting pitty and "OMFG STUPID VALVE!! LETS ALLS END HIM A NEW DVD-R!" No. We care not, and seriously, take your whining some place else. As stated, it's your fault for not searching about it or anything. And really, is it going to KILL you do leave it downlaod overnight+while your at school if need be?

*EDIT*

Be careful of posting any kind of criticism of Valve/Steam on these forums, it always brings out the "OMG TEH VALVE IS PERFECT STFU N00B" crowd.
Yeah, it sucks that the backup feature is facked. A better way to do it is to simply burn the GCFs to a DVD instead of using Steam backup.

Yay for flamage.

This is why HL2 isn't popular with the uneducated masses- because unlike a console game you have to screw around with it for bloody ages- PC games tend to be less user friendly anyway but Steam exacerbates things.

What may seem second nature to us won't be to somebody who has picked the game off the shelf and didn't have the foresight to check the net for amendments to a system you might've foolishly expected to work.

To begin with I thought his complaint was laughable, but you know what? After over a page of elitist twaddle and people calling him a dumb ****, I'm actually starting to feel a glimmer of sympathy for everyone else who can't grasp Steam's obscure workings...

Jesus, people are ripping on me just because I'm saying that Steam's backup tool is not working, which actually happens to be true.

Why can't they fix it??? The game's been out for 6 months for God's sakes!!!

Thank you for your pathetic comments everyone. Not that it's never happened here. I mean I've always been on Valve's side, and the first time I dare criticize something, not even the game, but a Steam feature which doesn't work, I get treated like crap.

Human nature I guess ...

Quoted for truth. The backup system is broken - it should be fixed, no need for people to be defensive. What I did was burn my entire steam directory to CD as a backup, and made sure it went back on a drive with the same letter, with the same program paths. Worked OK, didn't trust the backup.

:bonce:

We have these cool things called DVDs now.

You don't have to use the valve backup utility....All you have to do is burn your steam folder( you can split it into 2 DVD's if you have to). Then when you copy it back over to your HD just delete the file clientregistry.blob from the steam folder and you are good to go.

I personally think you should sue valve for your DVD-R disk, and then sue them for all of the mental distress this has caused you. We just don't have enough BS lawsuits these days!

You might wanna explain how to get 1 file on 2 cds then

To be fair I don't think it's his fault at all, it's not much of a backup feature if you have to check it, you should be able to have enough faith in a backup feature for it to work for you to want to use it! I think the making a thread was a bit OTT but meh, really who gives a shit. get over yourselves

I just back up the gcf files from the steam folder...

I would never trust a backup utility from Valve lol.

There was no need to create this thread though, it's not the end of the world.

It seems like alot of people have experienced this and it's really an unfortunate situation, but there's no use complaining about it like this. Like Devvo said, it's not the end of the world. :)
