After thinking a bit about the forthcoming Doom movie, I'm starting to feel a bit optimistic. I was a bit upset that they decided to move away from the original basis...."an invasion from Hell", but I'm starting to come aboard.
The basic elements of Doom games are present: horror, intense action, and atmosphere. I feel that if the writers went with the Hell concept, it may have been too thin and put themselves in a postition that they could not succeed: meeting fan expectations. Making the premise of the film different enough from the game avoids that and expectations are immediatly lowered. I agree that the virus thing will obviously resemble Resident Evil, Night of the Living Dead, etc, but it's enough to extend Doom rather than try to recreate it, which may be an insurmountable task. Furthermore, I've yet to see a peice-of-shit movie with the Rock, except for maybe the Scorpion King. He has really evolved into a pretty good actor....he looks great in "Be Cool". Maybe I'm just talking out of my ass here, but I have faith that this will be a decent movie.
After hearing an interview with the Rock, I was kind of won over. He claims the action sequences are incredible and the movie is quite scary. ID said the concept is great and you know that ID was being as picky as the studios were. I'll admit I was pissed at first, but I'm now in the category of saving my judgement until I see the movie.
