Tired of multiplayer? Want some good Half Life singplayer action, but there aren't enough? Well try these 3 awesome HL1 mods.

Mod 1: Sweet Half Life

shlwal39ap.jpg

Sweet Half Life takes place during the Black Mesa incident, and in my opinion is the best out of the three. This mod includes new NPC's, weapons, textures, code, everything. It evan has 2 separate paths you can take, with 2 different end bosses! Also, this mod is from the maker of the more recent Mistake of Pythagoras.

Note: This mod is not compatible with Blue Shift's High Definition Pack!

Mod 2: Peaces Like Us

plstit13ui.gif

The story: The Black Mesa science team travel to Xen one day and become allies with the Xen Aliens, and set up a lab there. But one day, the military come to take the lab down.

This mod is also from the creators of Sweet Half Life. While not very rich in content, it's still damn good.

Mod 3: Point of View

In this mod you get to play as a Vortigaunt. Cool, eh? It evan has a log telling you the Vortigaunts thoughts. In this game, the Black Mesa Science Team has stolen a precious Xen artifact, and you must get it back!

Enjoy!

And for the hell of it:

Scientist Slaughter!!! (of course :-D)
detailed scientist death messages
Scoreboard that tells exactly how many scis have been killed
visual damage effects for fire and electric damage (now on all monsters). Scientists also get fx for radiation & cold damage
scientists can be frozen solid then smashed
scientist target identification hud
ability to shoot off a sci's head, now with a fire-hose blood effect
ability to cut a sci in half with a suitable weapon
ability to turn a sci into a skeleton with acid
Scatter scientists into your favorite HLDM maps to be shot (no, this doesn't mean there is multiplayer support)
extra weapons & upgrades to previous ones
all weapons and ammo respawn
player respawns, too
new & improved monsters
turretmania! a lot of different turret types that can have more than one weapon.

STORY:

The story, if anyone is interested, puts Gordon Freeman (the player) as an agent of an advanced weapons corporation called Death & Destruction Inc. (DDI). DDI on the other hand takes orders from an alien military force known as the Nephilim Alliance (NA), originating from an alternate dimension. The problem is loads of scientists are appearing out of nowhere and they need someone to get rid of them...

All the weapons in SSH and all their functions are in here.

The tertiary function (attack3), can be reconfigured in the controls menu. Default is middle mouse button (mouse3).

Have fun killing those annoying scientists.

ill have to try out those first two at least

if you're not tired of multiplayer, get The Specialists, it's pure awesome fun.

These are all from the Japanese community, yes?

Going to try out Sweet Half-Life, looks pretty fun. Those two other I've played a few years ago, great fun.

I would also recommend Someplace Else, a short but fun Half-Life singleplayer experience. :)

Are those gameplay vids on YouTube by you Ultima? That song in the Sweet Half-Life one is pretty good.

...?

Japanese aren't the only ones who draw like that, unless you are including every non-Japanese anime fan in "the Japanese community"

Besides, it's just the cover art. Usually a mod is developed by a team, and they probably got someone who happened to like to draw anime style to do the artwork.

You're apologies are no longer accepted.

No, seriously, they are from the Japanese community.

I have a habit of asking question I usually know the answer to.

Apologize to me now, animeluvr.

Please tell me you've played Case Closed.
http://www.planethalflife.com/caseclosed/

What is Case Closed about? The website doesn't seem to be working for me.

I enjoyed those first two (Sweet Half-Life and Peaces Like Us), and tried Point of View but stopped after a while. It had a section with a bunch of corridors and rooms that looked really similar and were easy to get lost in, and I wasn't patient enough to figure out where to go.

Also, those videos were very nicely put together. Makes me want to play again. There were a few parts in the Sweet Half-Life one that I don't really remember.

The other SP mods I liked were They Hunger and Halfquake + Halfquake: Amen. Halfquake isn't for people who don't enjoy constantly dying and having to hover your finger over quicksave (and being mocked for it) :p. There's also the part with going through the same area multiple times, with slight sadistic twists in each repitition. It was just so creatively/artistically/humorously done that I loved it. The end of Peaces Like Us seems to have a similar feel to Halfquake, in terms of art and puzzles. I think the Halfquake guys had an interview with Koumei Satou (who did Peaces Like Us).

Has anyone tried Azure Sheep, Poke646, or Heart of Evil? I've heard they were good but never got around to playing through them.

Azure Sheep and Poke646 are both fantastic, haven't tried HoE.

It's about a cleaning guy that is about to go home the night before the Resonance Cascade. While getting something in the back room, something heavy falls on his head and he falls into unconsciousness. He wakes up, only to find himself smack in the middle of the accident.

Oh yeah I forgot about Poke646. That mod was the total pwnage.

Been playin' Sweet Half-Life for a while, pretty neat.

Lol, downloading Scientist Slaughter House now. Looks f**king sick! :E

Unfortunatly the music won't load on the site of the author, so I googled a bit and found this on gametrailers:
A video I made showing off the awesome Half-Life 1 mod "Sweet Half-Life" ----------------------- Not since "Scientist Slaughter-House" and "They Hunger" have I seen a mod so beautifully made. This mod was created by the same people that made the recent "Mistake of Pythagoras", and the old classic "Peaces Like Us." They proved they had talent with Peaces Like Us, but with this mod, they showed us just how far that talent goes. The mod is ****ing amazing. New enemies, new weapons, new textures, new code, new ****ing everything! It's even got two alternate paths, which take you to two completely different places, to fight two different bosses! This mod is truly a classic, and worth re-installing your old Half-Life 1 CD. --------------- INSTRUCTIONS FOR HOW TO PLAY: This mod is not steam compatible. In order to play, you have to have your old 'sierra/half-life' folder. When Steam came out, you were given an option to either keep it, or delete it. If you kept it, then just install the mod there. If you deleted it, use your old Half-Life 1 CD, install it, patch it, and then install the mod to the newly create 'sierra/half-life' folder. ------------------ It'll crash if you have the HD-Pack installed (that one Blue-Shift contains) -------------- The song used in the first part of this video is koumei satou's (Creator of the mod) Sweet Half-Life Theme Song. Here's his MP3 Lounge: ----http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?songs=28484&T=6670 - --------- http://rapidshare.de/files/17529348/Theme_of_Sweet_half-life.mp3.html --------- There is two endings possible. Here's a hint for when you get to choose which path you will take. Both path's are in view, here. ----------- http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/4046/shl1000022vq.th.jpg ---------- Better hint:
Right after you kill the big momma in the level shown in the screenshot, go back into the hanger, take a right, and go into the room that held the floating cube that activated the UFO. There will be another one there. walk up to it, and it should go and activate another UFO. If it doesn't, press the 'use' key on it. Go into the UFO, and there you go. Make sure to stick around after the credits on the good ending, for a special little something
http://www.gametrailers.com/umwatcher.php?id=462
The rapidshare link is where you can download the theme song for sweet hl. Only thing is, is the fact that you hear all the explosion and talk from the trailer trough it.

Edit: Ok now the site seems to be working properly so you can just ignore my post.

Just finished Sweet Half-Life, pretty fun and challenging. I wonder though, how do you get the other ending (or more?)?

*Spoiler*

In the area with the UFO's and the open area with Gonarch: the first way is through the pipe outside that you can open and crawl inside; the second is to go back to the UFO's and you should be able to get in one of them. Personally I never figured out how to make it through the pipe without dying (if someone could tell me how, that would be great!), so I never got to play that ending. :(

Peaces Like Us is absolutely my favorite SP mod of all time. I like to go back and play it every now-and-then. Didn't think Sweet Half-Life lived up to the quality of Peaces, but it was also pretty good.

I'll have to try PoV; sounds like fun.

If you guys want to play a very pro SP mod, check out Redemption. Good story, great voice acting, and very fun.

If you want to know how to get past something, PM me. I'd rather not reveal in this thread. :)

Peaces Like Us, Sweet Half-Life, ETC 1-2, They Hunger and Redemption are all great mods. Redemption was really awesome.

Ahh, ok. I could've never figured that out. Thanks for your answer. :)

Cool beans. I have never played some of these old HL1 mods. I will have to give them all a shot!

Nice post. :smoking:

I never really enjoyed Poke646. True I didn't pick it up until well after the end of the HL1 years, but I seem to remember it had a set sewer maps pretty early on. Always an enthusiasm killer.

Played Redemption back when it was released on a PCZone cover-disk (that was probably 1999/2000). That had some really great ideas in it, particuarly considering the first two missions really screwed with the Half-Life formula (A Mountain Temple and a Xen Circus?) It's an interesting yet clearly amateurish take on how the Half-Life saga could have progressed.

I've played Point of View and Azure Sheep. You can play one without the other, but you'd miss the shared locations and the sequel they were supposed to be making will continue on from them. Both have some really rather good moments and they also both have areas of intense suckage, and some of the ideas in Azure Sheep particuarly were absolutely shocking (it added a bunch of entirely redundant guns it nicked from Aliens, had a Speaking Gordon Freeman that you fought alongside in a part of the game he was never accompanied in by an NPC. And a Speaking Adrian Shepherd who magically gets transported back to Black Mesa in some kind of insane continuity error.) The Female sidekick was kind of amusing, but she required the patient of a saint to herd around. Point of View was a shorter and overall better put together, though the game was a bit sparse on weapons. At least the mod-maker anticipated the Vortiguant development in Half-Life 2.

Never played Sweet Half-Life, but I'm pretty sure I've played Peaces like Us from a cover-disk. My mind from that period is cluttered with horrid experiences of dull singleplayer mods so I may give it a whirl to see if I remember it. I definitely remember it's Engrish title.

Anyone understand the UFO ending to Sweet-Half Life? I already beat the other ending, but *SPOILERZ SPOILERZ* I'm stuck after watching that freaky cutscene, in this weird white bedroom, and you cant go anywhere.

I got a problem with Sweet Half-Life, it contains some spoilers about the game though so beware those who’ve not completed it yet.

I made it all the way into the fourth level in the spaceship, where you fight the spacecraft boss.
After a bit into the fight, the game just completely freezes with looping sounds. I've tried playing it two times but still the same thing happens. It's like something is supposed to happen in the battle, like a trigger which fail to play out resulting in a complete freeze (though I highly doubt that).

Anyone knows what's causing this? I would really want to play through it as I have a feeling the end is very near. ;)

There was... more stuff to do after that? Wow. I think I need to play through again and actually finish the game this time.

that happened to me too, not sure why it does that, but just try to rush the battle, quickly kill it with the gluon gun, if you have ammo, and the rpg. should take it down quickly

So you need to kill it quickly? I'll try that, but I think I need to cheat to get more ammo to the Gluon gun though because I tried to use the RPG but it takes a while to shoot and Gordon is so slow reloading the damn thing. ;)
Anyway, I just want to get through that part. Thanks for the tip, I'll try and see if it works.

EDIT: Yay! It worked. Thanks again, DESSTROYER. :)

SPOILERS!

The second ending were better than the other in my opinion, the spaceship were much more fun to play (although I prefer the Xen setting) as you could have grunts to assist you throughout the levels. The aliens put up to a good fight too, I like their spamming laser gun, very handy.
I liked the use of the 2001 monolith too (although I'm not sure if it's a just a joke from the developers ;)), especially the sequence in the bedroom, pretty freaky.
And the ending, so Shephard got away with the chick? Haha, lucky son of a bitch.

Anyway, I definitely liked this mod. It was pretty lengthy, perfect difficulty, the two different endings (although they should have made them a little more obvious, especially the second path) were cool.
Anyone who's still not played it should definitely try it, well worth it in my opinion.

4 out of 5. :)

I've played a little bit of Scientist Slaughter House as well, one of the most sick mods evar. It's fun though, nifty weapons. :E
