well it looks like Source/steam will be an ad delivery system:

With the recent announcement that Threewave was going to be using the Source engine for future games to provide a unique opportunity for sponsors to reach gamers in the first-person shooter genre......

We’ve been approached by ad agencies, media buyers and brand managers. Not just interested in buying an add, but getting their products placed into the game. And even taking that a step further. On our Source engine product in development, the protagonist gets game benefits from using a beverage. Just imagine what that would be. Like a Red Bull or Starbucks or something like that. What that means is that the game is playable and fun without the brand, but to get the full experience, take advantage of the brand’s integration.

I have no problem with this business model so long as they adhere to this:

But now, with the opportunity to provide sponsored content, we can develop multiplayer content for the community for free (or a very low cost) to the consumer.

That's the lamest excuse for ads in-game that I have ever heard.

Imagine the player sees a horde of blood-thirsty marauders approaching the blown-out office building quickly and the hero scrounges around the numerous crates to find an entire cache full of Starbucks Coffee Frappuccinos® that will give him the speed boost he needs to take out hundreds of these guys!

I hate this in-game ad crap.

It all seems to have come out all at once.

If it means non-intrusive to gameplay AND cheaper/faster content, fine. Otherwise it's not worth it to the gamer.

I dont like this development, but at least they say it will lead to cheaper content, while EA just charges normal prices.

They better take off five bucks from that pricetag then tbh

It works well in sport's games because sports areans are full of advertising any way so it makes the game more orthentic, but to have it in fps.... i guess it depends on how its done. If its just a coke machine prop then thats cool but if they slowly scroll past some kind of starbucks banner in a cut scene... now that will piss me off.

They won't take anything off the price, they will leave it like it is and just earn more, thats the way business works.
