I got steam when if first came out, but it didn't really work out for me. I got rid of it, and went on with life. My hard-drive has crashed since then, and I lost all of my files. Now that Steam has been around, and is stable now, I decided to get it, only to find that it costs 40 bucks to play Counter-Strike. How can they charge money for a game that I've been enjoying for free? Is there any way around this, or do I seriously have to dish out 40 bucks?

dude, I think your talking about counter-strike Condition Zero(40 bucks), scroll down in the games menu to install CS 1.6 for free.

regular counter-strike is below condition zero, and it still prompts me to pay up. It gave me the option to click "i already have it." but it required the CD key of the platinum edition of half-life (which i dont have)

You need a legit Half-Life or Counter-Strike: Retail CD Key to access Half-Life and it's mods on Steam (such as Counter-Strike).

I do have a legit copy of Half-Life (not the platinum version) and i put my CD key in, but Steam won't take it.

Are you using the same account as you did before as once you register a CD Key with an account you can't use it again on another.

I realized that just now. I also realized I don't remember the Steam account name and password, and I also realize that the E-mail account tied to said Steam account is my old AOL email adress, which is gone since I switched from AOL.

Am I totally screwed?

Not at all, simply go to the steampowered.com site and contact support with your problems I'm sure they'll help :)

According to steampowered.com, I have to mail my CD key (from the original case) to Valve, with my new account name, and some other stuff. It's too much of a hassle and it's killed all of my interest in Counterstrike. Thanks anyway, Munro. You were a huge help!

Forgetting your login details is the new losing your CD.

You could always buy Half-Life from a store you can get it from around £4.99 now.

Naw, that costs money. I'll just steal a friend's CD key.

I am a total moron.

Steam is now working perfectly, Counter-Strike is running, and I have a valid CD key. Apparently, my copy of Blue Shift worked just fine (I feel like a dumbass for not realizing it before.) Anyway, thanks to everyone (Munro) who helped me with this issue, and remember that Blue Shift is just as good as a Platinum Pack with Steam.
