Tim Schafer: Bobby Kotick is a “total prick”

I have loved Tim for ages now and this just proves once again why. He is totally correct in his assessment of this a-hole. The guy is a parasite as are so many executives who do not care about innovation and creativity but rather have their eyes fixed only on $. I understand that it is a business, but it is a business that will thrive and grow if nurtured, not sucked dry by a soulless vampire.

Here's one of the best quotes:

"Hopefully he'll go back to another industry scene. He could go to an industry that makes more money. Ball bearings… something that suits his passions more. Weapons manufacturing?"

Tim tells it like it is, then again he's from the golden age of gaming so he can see what it's turning into when people like Kotick are involved.

butthurt over losing publisher for his most mediocre title yet lol

schafer should shut up, and make some good games. his lucas days are over.

Brutal Legend is bad? I haven't played it, but I was hoping it'd be something special.

Regardless of the 'real' reason why Tim actually thinks Kotick is a dick, but we all know that he is a dick, why derail Tim for saying it. Brutal Legend may have been a rather mediocre game, but in my opinion, it's better than what Activision produces.

It just felt awkward as hell to me, way too contrived, trying to do way too many things, etc. I can safely say that a lot of people disagree with my opinion on it--I just have high expectations given Psychonauts. And if anyone was wondering, I was being facetious in my first post.

Bobby Kotick is a business GENIUS

Haha, so what, now we judge the man and his opinions by the content of his latest work? This is dumb as heck.

Butthurt or not, the dude's worked with Kotick, he's been sued by Kotick, he knows what the **** he's talking about. I think this goes a little beyond "telling it like it is" (well, actually, that's exactly what it is).

By the way, how'd that lawsuit turn out, anyway? Assuming it's even seen a courtroom yet.

babyheadcrab and Kotick, up a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G

I don't know him and I'm certainly not known for giving people the benefit of the doubt. **** him.

He has to EARN me.

I LOOOOOOOOVE Bobby Kotick so ****ing much. I want to tongue punch his fart box, in the words of a CS:Source wisecracker last night.

Tim is always fun in interview, he's an articulate and insightful dude, particularly on the games' industry. Thanks for the full read.

I believe they settled out of court

I've never been that hooked by Schafer's games - I enjoyed Psychonauts but I missed out on his Lucasarts games when I was a kid and never got far trying to play them more recently. Regardless I've always respected him as a designer and personality in the industry 'cause i do respect his flava, ya dig?

I also think Kotick is a total prick. Publishers in general seem to be universally evil. Activision, Vivendi, EA... notice a trend? I'm happy that digital distribution is slowly pushing these supermassive publishers the way of the dodo, at least in PC gaming (long live Valve etc).

@ Activision's response that T-9000 posted: yup. When you stop playing games you stop being allowed to have an opinion about them and you sure as hell stop having the privilege of your opinions on the industry in general being respected by those of us that do play games. Kotick can shove his moneygrubbing tactics up his big fat corporate ass. This is one bandwagon I have no problem whatsoever jumping on.

Kotick never really played games. I remember reading an article that my bosses printed out and made us all read to prove that they could run a successful video game company while having no interest in games whatsoever. And in the article it said that despite having no idea what the games industry was about, he forged Activision into a successful business.

EDIT: Here it is. http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2009/0202/052.html

When Kotick stumbled across his umpteenth new business idea--buying a bankrupt videogame maker--it seemed a perfect mismatch. Gaming fanatics like Atari's Nolan Bushnell and Electronic Arts (nasdaq: ERTS - news - people )' William (Trip) Hawkins had made fortunes in the young industry, but businessmen lacking any passion for games had a way of winding up broke. The 26-year-old Kotick seemed destined to land in the latter group. To him, playing videogames was a waste of time.

In an industry full of passionate gamers, Kotick stood apart: the guy who never picked up a joystick. (He vaguely recalls enjoying the arcade hit Defender as a teenager. In college he abandoned playing videogames for good.)

Also, I lol'd at these parts when I read it.

Still, despite his personal dislike for using his own product, he was determined to make his mark by catering to the needs of deeply passionate game designers.

He moved Activision to Los Angeles, keeping only the name and 8 of 150 employees. He raised $5 million from Wynn, Edward Lampert (the private equity capitalist and an old high school classmate) and the Sheas (a rich couple he met while on vacation in Thailand). The following year he raised $40 million in a stock offering. His pitch to gamemakers was that he would be more fun to work for than the alternative. "ea has tried to commoditize development," he told them. "We won't absorb you into a big Death Star culture."

Oh Bobby buddy, you're such a liar.

Man, why'd he have to retract it? And in such a lame way too. :(

"Oh yeah, that part during the interview where I whipped out my cock and dragged it across a life-sized image of Kotick?

... Wardrobe malfunction."

The retraction isn't THAT lame, he basically said "I meant what I said, it was just somewhat unwise to state it so publicly. Also Kotick is Darth Vader."

Yeah I guess, but it's like he was the Punisher and Kotick is John Travolta, and he's just tied him to the car that drives into the explosives which causes a chain reaction in the shape of a skull (or something more Schafer's motif), and he's walking away all cool like because he's so awesome he doesn't even need to see the explosive tour de force he just meticulously crafted, and then at the last minute he turns around and goes, "whoopsie!"

Yes that was the most complicated analogy I could think of. :dork:

Exactly. This chump puts his employees' jobs at risk by designing shit games that had zero chance of making money from the very start.

Ya know I realized that Activision has cornered a market of casual gamers that's never been seen before using titles like Modern Warfare 2. These are people who either just jumped in to the gaming community or have been there a while but only play the most popular games. These people don't care if some prick is running the company that made the handful of games they play. Most prolly won't even know the name of the company. They'll buy the games based on two things - price and commercials.

So the point of all of this is - no matter how much we hate Kotick or his business-standard practices or Activision itself, people are going to keep paying money for these games. I mean I can live my life not purchasing anymore Activision games (blizzard is another story), but the vast majority don't care as long as it looks like it might be fun and doesn't cost more than the rest of the games in the world.
