Tips with lag for me?

Now i know there is plenty of mature adults on this forum so could only people over the age of 18 reply to me. Id rather not have a bunch of kids going "LMFAOROFL GIT DSL U NEWB!!11"

My problem is the following... Yes like many people, i run a 56k modem. Why? The reason of why everyone else does.. They arent available for anything else. I have a Satelite Modem running high speed browsing for downloads and such but its about 10x worse on gaming then 56k. Just a warning to you 56kers who think satelite is the option. I was just wondering if anyone could give me a few tips on reducing my lag on Source. In CS1.6 id get a ping of around 200-300... Steady.. Now i learned to play really well with that ping.. CAL M level. But im bored with that and play Source... Sometimes i get a 300 ping mostly it continuously sits on 900. I was just wondering if anyone knew some fancy tricks to help me get a steady ping perhaps.. Ive noticed im not the only 56ker with a 900 ping but is there any hope?

lol just kidding

The only way that I know how is by getting a better connection. Because if I'm not mistaken, your computer sends a packet of information over the net to the server, which calculates it and sends it back to your computer. Thats how you get your ping and movement/shooting in the game with everyone else. I don't think theres any software that could speed it up for you. In my semi-noobish opinion, I think you're kinda stuck with th 56k and the sat. A buddy of mine used sat for a few months then stayed with 56k. He said teh pings on sat were ridicuolous. anyways, sorry i couldn't help more.

I'm in this same situation.

Oh and, what does this "CAL M" stand for anyways?

its the sad truth dude... :( i had 56k be4 i know) well play hl2 instead it rocks ass and it dosent lag. perfect ;)

Yeah i understand, i was just asking i guess for some slick 56k CFG tweaks or something.

CAL M is a old CS 1 / BF1942 / etc Leage...

CAL O . CAL IM . CAL M . CAL I (lowest to highest)

I was just playing souce witha steady 300-400 ping, in source thats very playable for some reason. But is there any cool little tweaks?

make sure your comp isn't sending out crap from someone else, you could have someone rinsing your bandwith. Or try different servers. Aim for one close to you then the packets wont have to travel as far.

I used to play q3 with a ping of 3-400ms. I could still batter people on dsl. Now im on 512k broadband, with a ping of 30 on most uk servers. Just ordered 2mb broadband, cant wait to see what that ping will be like.

Also how much are you paying for dialup? broadband is getting quite competitive. zen.co.uk for instance do a 256k service for £15 quid a month. But that only helps if your in the UK.

Change your rate! Your should look for articles on what it should be set top but it can help. (rate is a net connection setting in half life if you didnt know) Also there are other settings that can help. http://www.tweakguides.com/HL2_1.html Might have something that helps.

No no, its an acronym....what do the letters stand for?

I have dial-up also and I just updated CS:S but it sucks 'cause I just broke my arm. Anyways, is CS:S really playable for dial-up even with in-game voice? I play AA a lot and I run TS while playing AA and my ping goes sky-high.. like 1000. It's kinda hard to believe I can play CS:S with a 400 ping...

P.S. DoctorGordon, is that quote from Office Space, the most 1337 comedy?

hey people i dont know where you lot are from but shop around for cheap broadband it's worth it youll be blinded by the speed limit but smooth skillz for playing on 56k takes some doing.
but anyway like someone else said broadband is getting cheaper and cheaper i get 1mb telewest connection for £25 a month thats about $50 so its worth an extra £10.
oh yeh and to the kid that kicks arse on quake with a 56k conection thats because by the time they seen ya to shoot ya you had been gone and done a lap but still like i say skillz my hat comes off to yas for still having the paitience.

I apprecieate the helping guys, i didnt expect a huge ammount but you at least tried. Ive tried to get DSL for 3 years in my area... I love it to much here and im not leavin.. I own like 140 achres of land in the middle of no where so yeah im stuck with dial up. I would have DSL or Cable in a second. Appreciate the help and if anyone figures anything else out let me know.

I'm in the same boat as you, sir.

I live in the middle of nowhere, and I cannot get any broadband at all. I ended up getting a 2nd phoneline, a 2nd modem, and bonded the modems using multilink (not supported by all ISPs). The stability is GREATLY increased, while the pings stay the same.

For your situation though, i would make sure you have your rate in CSS to somewhere around 3500, with cl_cmdrate at ~20 and cl_updaterate at ~15ish. You have to mess around with the settings, but it definately helps. Also, be sure you are getting a very solid framerate. Although it doesn't technically affect your ping/connection, i have found that my connection is more stable when using lower visual settings. I would also disable voice communications if you're sticking with 56k vs 112k. I have tested voice comm with netgraph, and the connection just gets bloated when voice comm is active, especially when someone is talking for more than a couple words.

In CSS, my ping in a 6-player game can be sub-200ms, while in a 20 player game it can be 250-300. I can even get into some 32-player games if I find a good server, and hover around 300ms. The ping doesn't really matter, its really just trying to get the game to not skip all around.

One last alternative would be to try to find an ISDN ISP around you. This requires an ISDN telephone/data line, and an ISDN compatible ISP. I haven't had luck with this, as the cost of it would be well over $100/month plus my voice line.

Hopefully I helped with my wealth of dialup knowledge :p I've been stuck on dialup for... hmm... about 10 years, probably would have had broadband about 6-7 years ago if it was available.

Good Luck.

See paintballer knows exactly what its like, i know no imature jerk heads have responded to this yet but ive read this forum, "GET DSL U NEWB" "LMFAO n00b 56ker roFl so 5 years Ago"

Yeah paint ive come to know alot of info on 56k, and i am happy that Source is created to the point where ping really isnt the worst issue AT ALL. Hell if u got 400 ping and a fast Video card its almost like DSL... Oddly enough. Yeah i tend to stay away from my settings, defaults seem to do the best for me, ive messed with CS1.6 CFG settings for 6 years.. my defaults work best.

The talk about rate and changing the cl_ settings...where can I access those?

Id try these rates for 56k:
cl_cmdrate 30
cl_updaterate 30
cl_smooth 0

I have dial up (i connect at 28.8k)and i play CSS constantly, i use rates of
cl_cmdrate 8
cl_rate 10

But yesterday, i just found this new command
cl_predict, when set to 0 (off) you lagg around, but this is where your acuall body is, like when ever you go around the corner, and get shot, but you go back, but because of the high ping, you lag back around the corner and die. this fixes this, but the only thing is it is a huge change. When you shoot for example it takes this 200-300 ms, before it even happens on your screen.
I highly recommend that if you are stuck on dial up, that u change this.

My name in game = Dial Up Dan

cl_cmdrate 10 ? wtf .. and btw cl_rate IS different from rate.

After Further evauluation of cl_predict, it is only good in some cases.

lmao, buy a dsl m8... saves u from a lot of trouble. if u're an adult u should have enough money to spend on a new connection...
I ordered a 12Mb connection because I had lag with 2Mb :p

Command line?

Press ~, but you need to enable it in options first.
(Options -> Keyboard ->Advanced)

To find out sertain types of commands put cvarlist in, or for spacific, put cvarlist cl, for cl commands, and cvarlist sv, for server commands, etc...

I was searching around on google for tips to run css better and i found this thread, well i to have the same problem i live in the middle of a damn field so i cant get anything either. I started a clan when css first came out, so i could chose everything like where the server is located and what not this did help and i was able to play css with a 300-400 ping, but now that i left the clan im haveing problems finding a server to run good for me. i did try some of the commands you said but none seem to help, do you guys know of any thing i could look for as far as commands and servers?

Yeah BLABLABLAQUOTE]

Your absolutely right, and so is paintballer. But nowadays, its ur ping. Servers only allow a max of 100-120ms now, its shite i know it coz i got 256k sounds alot better, prolly is, but i would have a go with 512+..

Sorry but ive been stuck with the same problem as u for about 4 years. Internet is simply to expensive at the area i live in.
