If your HL2 doesn't load it's most likely because it's not Downloaded all the way. Right-Click on HL2 and check it's % completion, if it's not a 100% right-click on steam.
If your Steam monitor says you have more than 10% to go turn off your computer and do something else.
Don't bother leaving your computer on to DL 4 k/b. The more people on steam downloading the files the worst the speed. The less people the faster the line will move.
Later people will have already got HL2 fully downloading and you get HL2.
