Lately I've been reading a lot of posts about the Steam engine. Its usually some person crying about how he can't activate his/hers copy of HL2. Then someone else comes along saying: "Steam helps us combat piracy... Blah blah blah" I think that people dont realize the implications that this steam thing is going to have on the future of games.
Most of you people just read the reviews shouting about how Valve helps us combat piracy and improve our games. The thing they never tell you is that Steam is much more than just an online authentication system. There are many serious issues asosciated with this great evil:
1) The most obvious one is that if you dont have access to the internet you dont get to play FULL STOP. It might come as a surprise to you but many people from less developed countries dont have an internet connection. Forgive me if im wrong but i dont think that it says ANYWHERE on the retail box that you need an internet connection to play the game.
2) All the game updates and patches go through steam. Imagine that a newer version of the game comes out and Steam tells you that to update you need to put in some extra cash. You would have no choice but to pay. In fact, I wouldnt be surprised if Steam starts charging money for spray logos! Or for ammo!!! Threre's nothing stopping it.
3) Doesnt Steam seem a bit like leagalized spyware? First of all no one knows what the steam client sends back to the servers and how much access it has to your system. Also, did you realize that Steam automatically assumes the right to load on statup (which is totally unnecessary) and spam you with popup windows. I would expect this kind of behaviour from "Super Porn Popup Spambar" but not form a well respected game company. You dont need a lot of imagination to see what will happen next... And other games will follow.
I HAVE AN ILLEGAL PIRATED HALF-LIFE 2. I WON'T PAY A SINGLE CENT FOR ANY MORE VALVE GAMES AND I WILL STEAL THEM ALL! INSTEAD I WILL USE MY MONEY TO BUY OTHER GAMES BECAUSE THEY DESERVE MY MONEY MUCH MORE THAN VALVE.
I don't know about you, but I won't let the game industry f**k me over. And I have a solution. I invite you to follow me and teach Valve a lesson. If we don't other game companies will be quick to follow. And by the way its not just games. In the future we might have to "authenticate" the next DVD we watch and CD we play.
(lol, its funny how the story of HL2 is similar to the story with Steam. Valve is like the Combine, trying to repress us - the gamers)
