Top Doom 3 review from Shoot Club

True.

I was like that. I really wanted to bash people who said anything bad about Doom 3, I was such a fanboy. I kept asking my friends who bought it before me and they said it's "ok", and I like it should be cool and all it got such great reviews, and that they (my friends) sucked. I actually fought with them that they probably are rushing and not reading PDAs, e.t.c.

- and they kept replying it was repeatitive, boring, e.t.c.

However, I felt quite embarrased that the game I had been trying to defend was nothing more than it's graphics and sound, when I actually played it.

See not trying to pick a fight, or bash anything undualy, but a lot of what is said could be pasted into a review of Halo, in my opinion.

I just guess my expectations for D3 must of been lower than yours because what I got was well worth the money.

Why bring Halo into this? Do we really need to go there AGAIN?

Wow - Doom 3 vs halo threads.

So you guys must actually think halo is a good game - since your making it compete with a recent game such as Doom 3. I thought Doom 3 would be compared to Far cry, but it has gone down so low as to be compared to a 3 year old game. Hilarious! :P

hehe - there's no contest. Halo is far better than Doom 3 :)

True that :P

Apart from the level copy and paste it was a decent game.

Nah, Halo really sucked. At least I Doom 3 didn't bore me too much to finish it.

Anyway, the review was sort of harsh. That Trevor dude wanted to do stuff like driving that truck thing, but he complained about parts that aren't just shooting things. Other than that, most of it is pretty true, he just dramatized it a little out of disappointment.

Yeah the point wasn't a halo sucks thread. Nor was it a Halo vs Doom 3 thread, as for me Halo doesn't hold a candle to Doom 3.

It was more along the lines that a lot of what is said to be negative about Doom 3, example repetative set pieces, could be put into context with Halo, yet people love Halo and even I can't deny the game is good.

I just think people are being over critical of doom because its Doom. Nothings really wrong with the game, its not perfect and certain areas are lacking, not even a die hard fan can deny that. Warbie prefers Halo to Doom 3, you can't tell him he's wrong (Stark raving mad, yes, wrong no) because its personal preference.

However, I'm using Halo over other games because its the biggest example of repetatition<SP>. Now clearly Halo does a lot right, and I think it's a super example of imitation over inovation, (except for driving the warthog, that thing never felt 'right' for me) It may not do anything new, but it does do it well.

Doom 3 does what it set out to do perfectly as far as I'm concerned. It's not the best game in the world, nor is it the worst by far. I think it is worthy of 89 to 90% because as a classic shooter its top drawer, and good fun to boot. And to be honest, other than showing off the engine, that's all I feel Doom 3 set out to do. I personally never got the impression that Doom 3 was going to be the next level in gaming, and I wasn't disapointed in what I got.

So to conclude I wasn't bashing Halo per say. Just:

I'm in a corridor, with a strange sense of deja vu. I'm almost sure I've been here before. I know what lies ahead of me. I turn the corner to enter a room exaclty as I expect. I then predicatably hear the sound of my enemy. Plasma rifle at the ready I burst into the center room to face....

An Imp?
A Reverent?
An Elite?

P.S. Sorry if people take offense to me having a go at Halo. Like I say its more Halo is the unlucky SOB that got in my LOS.

Also Its been a long night so if this doesn't make a lot of sense, sorry.

Same, don't hate it, don't like it that much.

I do agree with some of the things they say in that review, like iD being awesome at game engines but not that great at making games

"Boring! Not a single ****ing original idea in there. Even the Soul Cube is pretty lame. It's like, I dunno, Hellraiser meets Blood Omen. Actually, the whole ****ing game was like that. I was always, like, 'Yeah that's from Half-Life, that's from Undying, that's from Blood.'"

Yeah i was thinking the exact same ****ing thing all throughout the game. The PDA's were like System Shock, the Hell level felt as though it was lifted right out of Undying, the opening sequence reeked of Half-Life (Don't say "DOOM came before Half-Life" bla bla etc, DOOM may have come before Half-Life but i don't think there was any other game that had you starting off in a facility the same way Doom 3 does, until Half-Life came along)

all those things i could've easily delt with, IF THE GAMEPLAY WAS GOOD. But sadly it wasn't.

That review was awesome, and not just because its bashing Doom3, I just like the way its written.

Great review, and while I haven't finished Doom 3 yet, up to this point, I agree with it. I feel like I've already seen it all, it holds absolutely no mystery, it has no own identity at all. It's like it's trying to be three types of games, some weirdish mix between genres, a storybased shooter like Half-Life, a horror shooter like Undying and a real shoot 'em up like Painkiller or SS.

It does it all decently, but it excels at none of the above types of gameplay, it's not as immersive as Half-Life (the Martian base does not feel alive or like a real place at all) not as scary as Undying and the combat not as intensive as Painkiller. It feels like id took all succesful elements from shooters, jammed it into Doom 3 but lost the thing that makes those elements special in the process. It's a melting pot of FPS games, unfortunately not a very good one. There is absolutely no own input AT ALL, no own ideas, nothing.

It's decent, but not remarkable, it's entertaining, but nothing special, it's fun but completely forgotten in 2 months...

You forgot the Health chargers, total HL rip-off. :O
