are you serious? what else do you think an ethernet port is for? it's for connecting a PC to other PC's - be that in a LAN, or network, or on the internet through a router - or all of the above at once. sheesh.

What do you have to do in order to explore another computer on the same network?

Oh I've done this a few times between my laptop and desktop. Control panel > network > set up file sharing (or something of the sort, I'm on Vista right now and I'm sure it's a bit different), you turn it on and the comp should restart with the thing being on, do the same for the other pc make sure the ethernet is connected the whole time, and then go run and the name of the other computer's nick should be there that you setup in the 'set up file sharing' wizard thingy and you can drag and drop all you want.

You have 2 options. If you want to use a regular lan cable you will need to hook the cable up to a router, it wont work hooking it directly to 2 computers. You might be able to use a switch instead of a router but since I've never done this I don't know that it will work, in theory it should.

The simpler option will be to get a crossover lan cable. This will allow you to hook up 2 computers directly using ethernet.

You'll want a crossover cable if you want to directly connect 2 PCs via the LAN port. It is usually yellow in color. Same plug as a regular LAN cable but 2 of the wires are switched.
