Dude, they're automobiles (among other things) from outer space! When alien-bearing meteors crash down from the sky, alien mayhem usually ensues, not a chopper or a motorcycle. I think that's somewhat funny.

In the animated series, the robots all had their own unique cybertronic forms. They were vehicular, because that makes getting around Cybertron easy. Some obviously are not, but most are.

When the Autobots crashed onto Earth they were both severely damaged and unconscious. Their ship's computer was functional and repaired them using native designs of the area that it had been observing.

Thus the Transformers were (re)born.

These new designs are more true to their Cybertronic forms.
