Wooz who plays TTT with us actually sent me this. I thought it was a great, scary watch. Particularly for anybody with a fear of heights.

It's the view of a worker who has to climb to the top of his 1768 gilded transmission tower. But hey, at least the first 1600 feet is an elevator ride!

No sweat, right?

Already posted. And no, I don't think it deserves it's own thread. *arms*

Neat. I suppose OSHA would have a problem with them carrying a small, base jumping parachute, both in the event of an accidental fall, and to save, what, a few hours of climbing back down?

Even more weight to carry...

****! I knew I should have looked at the video dump first.

I was contemplating posting this in the video dump... but then decided "nah".

Guess I made the wrong decision. Oh well.

Do with this what you will, mods.

Nobody looks at videos in the video dump anyways.

I think I saw this once before, you need some massive testicles to do that job.

Even more weight to carry...

I'd rather carry a parachute even if it meant taking more time to climb there due to more fatigue.

I don't know what's the weight of a suitable type of parachute though.

That's slippery slope logic, bro.

I could come back at you and say "well why doesn't he bring two parachutes in case one fails?"

It would be a lot better than falling down to Earth and realizing "Damn, I probably should've packed that extra parachute!"

If the guy feels safe enough without a damn parachute strapped to him, which would impair his efficiency (and probably his ability to climb, making the chance of falling even higher) then just let him do it.

Wear a seat belt when you drive a car. Otherwise when you're in a head-on collision, crashing through the windshield head-first you realize "Damn, I probably should've fastened that seat belt".

Vegeta:

That's slippery slope logic, bro.

I could come back at you and say "well why don't you wear two seatbelts, in case one rips?"

It would be a lot better than crashing through the windshield and realizing "Damn, I probably should've fastened that extra seatbelt!"

Dude, you're acting like he doesn't already have some safety provisions.

I'm saying there's a LIMIT when it comes to safety vs. how it affects your performance.

Wearing a parachute would be a significant handicap.

Yeah but you dont die when your lifeline snaps as a result of the squirrel gnawing through it that was hidden in your bumbag.

And dont say that couldnt happen because you never know.

.

Well first off if you slip in the first place, and the safety chains in place malfunction, AND your parachute malfuctions, you were probably destined to die that day anyway.

The one video in the video dump with the dudes in France doing pull ups on those things make me sick to my stomach.

Same, I'm just waiting for one to slip D: Glad they don't but they're really dumb doing that.

This video is crazy also, but the guys are obviously trained to do it. They must have balls of steel.

Video is down.

First off I want to thank everyone for the great response I got on the video “Stairway to Heaven”, it was really much more than I could have hoped for. Now, having said that I am also very sorry that I could not keep the video up for you to share with your friends and family. I truly am sorry, I can see from the comments how popular it was and that’s why I want to explain what happened.
The footage of the climb came from a friend of mine that does this type of work, I have know him for several years and he has helped me many times in the past. Recently he gave me this video he shot on one of his jobs. I showed him the edited video and he approved it and I put it up on TheOnLineEngineer.Org and You Tube over the weekend. On Monday he was getting calls from colleagues telling him that they were concerned about what the video showed. His world is a very small one, and you don’t want to bite the hand that feeds you! Some facility owners are pretty uptight about liability and such and may not hire him if they think he does not take safety seriously.
So he asked me to take it down, and I did. That was Monday morning (Sep 13, 2010). Today (Sep 15) he told me it was up on You Tube, by the time I looked at it it had over 77,000 views. It was on more than a dozen websites. The chance that someone important would see it was increasing rapidly. So the video most of you saw was one that had been ripped off from my website before I took it down. I wrote asking the guy who put it up to take it down but got no response so I contacted You Tube.
Once again I am sorry about pulling the video, I know that every time I looked at it my legs got weak, there’s no way I could do that type of work. AND THATS MY POINT – I need this guy who made the video, we plan to do more of them, but it won’t happen if he can’t get work because he’s been black listed by the industry. He’s also my friend and I don’t want to see him get hurt because of some video I put up on the internet.
We have had two offers to broadcast this video, a request to submit it to a film festival in France, over 118,000 views on You Tube. This was all much more than we had ever planned for or thought would happen.
AS SOON AS WE CAN WE WILL HAVE MORE VIDEOS ABOUT TOWER CLIMBING, in the mean time please be patient.
And once again thank you for all the comments.
Russ

Those damn bastards want to corner the market on tower climbing videos. That's why they're threatening to blacklist him.

my god, this is terrifying. i can barely stomach watching the guys on the crane in france, but this is something else. when he first sets up the safety line to take a break and then leans back away from the ladder actually made me recoil in fear. ****.

Yeah way to shit all over what was quoted in the previous post by helping spread this video.

Yeah I'm a jerk like that, but hey, it shouldn't have gone up in the first place.

Dude, you're acting like he doesn't already have some safety provisions.

I'm saying there's a LIMIT when it comes to safety vs. how it affects your performance.

Wearing a parachute would be a significant handicap.

Sure, there needs to be an acceptable safety/performance ratio and there are some safety provisions, but there's nothing that saves him in the case of losing grip. He is only using a safety line during breaks according to the video.

Is a parachute a significant handicap? How much does a parachute weight (I don't know)?

Dayum that is some scary shit!
Also,
massive testicles to do that job.

25-30 pounds according to what I can find on Google.

So that's like carrying two of those bags he has, except he also has to wear it at all times (otherwise what's the point) which is really bulky and will increase the chance of slipping up and make him take longer to do his job which also adds to the danger.

Are radioactive spiders part of the safety standards?

Cause damn.
