Transparent spray problems

Hi all, i am quite new to this whole spray thing, i am trying to make my spray have a transparent background, i have done several searches on both google and within these forums, there was a tutorial but it has since gone :(.

Say for instance i just want some text saying "i Woz Ere" (as an example) and want to be able to spray on the top of another logo maybe, i have read about the alpha channels etc... and read the help with photoshop cs but just cannot grasp it at all, can someone point me in the right direction please?

I have had problems doing it too.. never can seem to figure out how to do it with photoshop 5.5.. maybe someone could help me out a little bit also?

buy photoshop or get a freeware program instead of pirating photoshop, maybe the gods will smile upon you and your brains will then understand it.

pardon my ignorance... but at which point in time did he claim to be using warez software.

as far as tutorials go, they don't get better than this one http://homepage.ntlworld.com/craigweb2k/Spray_Tut/

because the concept they are asking about it, is so basic, you don't go and buy a $500+ program if you don't know anything about it, and if you do, you don't ask for help on a forum such as this.

I do know about photoshop, as i have taken years of digital photography classes, and I have a legal version of photoshop. Sorry for asking a question, and it is the right forum to ask.. since this is a forum about hl2/css related subjects, and i believe a transparent spray is related to css, and there seem to be alot of people who know how to do it. And my main problem is there isnt a tga format add-on for 5.5, as there is for 7.0. (that i have found)

This is for Photoshop CS...

Select what you DO NOT want to be transparent for the whole image.

In the 'layers' window (F7), click on 'channels'.

Click the 'Create new channel'' button near the bottom (should create an alpha layer).

Now, fill in what you have slected completely white, and leave everything outside of that black... something optional is doing a gaussian blur to the white stuff... just makes the edges smoother looking...

You should then be able to save it as a .tga (default parameters) and convert it to .vmt/.vtf files and have the transparency working.

Make sure you only have ONE alpha layer... having more than one messes it up...

alright, assuming you are telling the truth, i was wrong then. although i find it amazing that you've taken years of digital photography and still don't know how to make a simple tga with a transparent layer.

i mean shit, i use an inferior program called the gimp(which is free), you just make a new image, select transparent background, draw or paste, save as tga and theres a spray. no tutorial needed, no .tga addon needed. sorry i just find it hilarious.

Another thing: Unless u have a transparent layer underneath your spray (in photoshop) it will appear in the preview window in CSS as a pink n black checker pattern. (and wont spray).

So it might be affecting transparency for some reason.

no pirate, but people should be smart enough to know that they don't need to pirate photoshop and rip off adobe, to do simple procedures like making an alpha layer.

'derrr i have to make a rectangle, oh photoshop is the best at doing that, everything else must be inferior! ok now i have it, how do i make a rectangle?!'

pathetic. sorry but if you're a pirate you'll get no respect from me.

I think someone needs a hug....

And thanks to the helpful people, its appreciated.

I found that if you just draw an image with transparent parts where you want it and save it as a 32bit targa it works. It's that simple ;)
